Who should fix broken teeth?

DD broke her front teeth last night (scooter accident).

Just waiting for the dentists to open, but who should I go to, to get it fixed?

Should I go to our normal dentist (I have no idea what they're like at fixing broken teeth) or spend some time trying to work out who's good at this kind of thing?

WWYD?

(FWIW, we already went to A&E last night, she's been checked for broken bones and has no signs of concussion).

Depends how badly they're broken and which teeth, dentists can build teeth using composite bonding.
My partner chipped his front tooth and they used composite bonding to make it a full tooth.

It's her front teeth. One is only slightly chipped, but one is broken in half lengthways, right up to the gum. I have some of the bits of broken tooth.

I'm hoping they can rebuilt it with composite, but not sure if they will be able to or not.

DD did the same, our usual dentist was able to build up the teeth with composite, she said they would possibly need replacing regularly but they've lasted at least five years so far. She was reluctant to do anything more permanent until DD was older.

You will need to keep an eye out for the nerves dying off, has happened with one of DD's teeth but not the other for some reason. How old is she?

Not sure about lengthwise, my DD's were broken across horizontally, I guess it will depend on what's happening under the gum line. Good luck with it, hope she's not in too much pain.

Assume it's adult teeth? Dd broke one of her front adult teeth when she was young. Regular dentist fixed it with composite - she'll probably need more work at some point but it's lasted 10 years so far

OhGoodItsRainingAgain · 02/04/2024 08:25

Are they adult teeth? Are they just small chips or is she likely to need them fully crowning? If so, I would be shopping around and I wouldn't be having them done one the NHS.

Your dentist will give you all the options, including being referred elsewhere if it's outside his/her remit (I've never seen a woman dentist actually - weird).

DS2 broke his front tooth when he fell off his bike at 14yo. Split it all the way across diagonally and it was hanging by a thread.

Our usual dentist glued it and said it might die and need replacing with a crown. Five years later and it's been fine. Even survived braces.

Yes, it's her adult teeth. She's nearly 11. She doesn't seem to be in much pain today, now the initial swelling on her lips has gone down.

Our dentist said to hold off crowning them for as long as possible because crowns only last a certain amount of time and each time you replace them you lose more of the underlying tooth, so you can only do it 2 or 3 times in total. NHS will likely only do crowns, we'll probably save up for her to have implants privately when she's older.

Yes with kids it's probably sensible to repair in the least invasive way possible and then look at a more permanent solution later if needed.

In case you haven't gone yet. Take the broken bits as sometimes they can be useful to reattach. Nothing matches as well as a piece of the tooth.
