Stinky 13 year old

DS is 13. He claims to wash under his pits but I can smell him even 15 mins after he has a shower and is in a clean t shirt

He is defo having a hormone rush as has grown about a foot this year alone. Has anyone got any ideas for super shower gels that will work? He doesn't need an anti perspirant, he just needs something that will kill the bacteria and keep him fresh

Bar soap and a flannel, and elbow grease

swooshes · 01/04/2024 19:38

He definitely does need an anti perspirant! Why are you saying he doesn't? Wash with soap, not shower gel, dry armpits, apply anti perspirant deodorant. The smell is the sweat as it dries and gets old.

Bountifulbarbie · 01/04/2024 19:38

I feel this may be the issue- he just doesn't scrub hard enough. He says he does but I'm going to contest it and tell him he can be the smelly kid in class if he doesn't do it properly

15 mins isn't long enough to sweat enough for it to become old. He will use a deodorant but if you stick that over an already stinky pit it's not going to get rid of it. What I'm looking for is something that's going to help wash off the stink first

Please don’t shame him! That would be unkind.

Just leave him a new bar of good quality soap and a flannel and also an anti perspirant deodorant.

ButterflyTable · 01/04/2024 19:41

Mitchum soon as he gets out of the shower.

LipstickLil · 01/04/2024 19:44

I agree with bar of soap and a flannel. There are anti-bacterial soaps like Dettol, Simple and Dial, which you can get on Amazon, if you can't find it in the supermarket. Then he needs to get into the habit of putting on deoderant as soon as he's dry. Plus, you need to get his clothes really clean - hot wash with Persil Bio and Dettol Laundry Cleanser does the job.

Bovrilla · 01/04/2024 19:48

I'll also add, it'll be his clothes too

Get some Halo sports wash and rub it into pits of all his clothes to kill any whiffs lurking there.

N/a

A 13 year old definitely needs antiperspirant, why would you think he doesn't?

It's likely because he hasn't worn it he has sweated in to his clothes and they now smell. Use halo or similar on all his tops and give them a good scrub under the arms.

He needs a bar of antibacterial soap, a set of flannels so he has a clean one each day and a strong antiperspirant such as Mitchum for men.

He probably does need an anti perspirant.

Why do you think he doesnt?

There's a difference between a deodorant and an antiperspirant.

BCBird · 01/04/2024 20:10

I use a scrunchie and soap. I.havevto.scrub for a while

My husband has this issue.. BO within an hour of showering, this deodorant fixed it.

Ivyy · 01/04/2024 20:20

Benzoyl peroxide face wash is what the dermatologists I follow online recommend, the brand in the UK is called Acnecide, I think it's called Panoxyl or something in the US.
It's usually used for spots as it kills bacteria, and although it says face wash on the tube it can also be used as a body wash on areas that get spotty, plus to get rid of smelly pits! You can order it from Amazon or buy from Boots, chemists and larger supermarkets.

If I don't put deodorant on within 5-10 minutes of getting out the shower I start to sweat, and can smell it, even if I've thoroughly scrubbed my pits, dd is the same.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 01/04/2024 20:49

My DS was also very smelly. He'd be ok when for school but be absolutely reeking when he got home.

Dettol antibacterial soap and Mitchum deodorant sorted him out. If he forgets to put deodorant on now, I can definitely tell later in the day.

caringcarer · 01/04/2024 20:52

He needs to shower with a bar of soap. Spray on anti perspirant as soon as he is dry then 10 minutes later deodorant. Something strong like Right Guard or Sure. He probably needs to shower twice a day like my DS. He showers 3 times sometimes as he does a lot of sport.

Computercalendar · 01/04/2024 20:54

Use exfoliating gloves.

goldenretrievermum5 · 01/04/2024 21:05

He definitely does need an anti-perspirant. He could have a genuine medical condition which causes him to sweat more - I wouldn’t jump to conclusions about him just being unhygienic. With DD no amount of washing, deodorant, antiperspirant etc could stop her from sweating - we ended up having to resort to underarm Botox!

theduchessofspork · 01/04/2024 21:08

Soap. Shower gel is only partly soap

soap
body scrub to get off the dead skin a couple times a week
a good anti perspirant like Mitcham

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 01/04/2024 21:18

Bar soap and a flannel.

Also, it could already be ingrained in his clothes, soak the pits of tops and shirts in vinegar, and try adding dettol laundry liquid to the wash. All this made a massive difference to DS.

Crazycrazylady · 01/04/2024 21:20

My 13 year old absolutely needs an antiperspirant. He needs both or he will be the stinky kid in the class.

35965a · 01/04/2024 21:22

Bar soap. I think Pears is the best. For some people - me included - shower gel doesn’t clean armpits properly, no idea why. Changing to bar soap was a revelation for me, never had a problem with whiffy pits since.

confuseeedd · 01/04/2024 21:28

He needs a high quality soap, and an anti perspirant.
I don't understand why you say he doesn't need one when he obviously does.

alcoholnightmare · 01/04/2024 21:57

Are the towels he's drying with definitely clean and dry before using? I once thought my husband smelled musty for days, but it was because the radiator wasn't on and bathroom not airy enough
