Labrador puppy freebie

Labrador puppy offer.

So best friend of SIL, dad owns a dog (she lives with her dad) and it’s had 7 puppies, Labrador. They’ve offered a free one to me and my DPs, so 2 puppies. I think DB would love one but they have a baby and a 5 year old and are in the process of moving to a house from a flat so timing not great.

We both have cats. I also work and am about 2 days in office.

DP’s unsure and so am I. Would you turn a Labrador freebie pup down? DP’s have had Labrador before so we are well aware of how much is involved re walking etc.

It you actually want a dog , yes. Could you arrange a dog walker for the days you have to go in the office?

Lifeetc · 01/04/2024 18:42

I would wonder why they are giving away an £800+ dog for free.
Do you know of the health of pups parents?
Vets bills are expensive

WingSluts · 01/04/2024 18:43

Yes, I absolutely would turn it down if it wasn’t the right time for the family. It’s just not fair on the dog otherwise.

I’d have preferred a smaller one. Like a dachshund.

Also labs shed so much hair.

Have the relevant health checks eg hip dysplasia scores all been done and passed?

They’re selling them for £2K! Think they’re very good pedigrees.

They’re giving them away as it was an unplanned pregnancy of the dog and SIL is best friends with the woman.

I would definitely turn it down

Well, obviously you're right there!Grin (I've had 2 standard shorthairs, they were the best boys)

Hmm unsure. But recall with our lab she had borderline hip dysplasia.

I assume they’re healthy though. Proper countryside dogs.

That’ll be my next big purchase. They sound lovely.

A neighbour up the street has a standard size dachshund and she’s so friendly.

I went for a low price they are £800 up near me.
Still wouldn't have one. Dogs are such a huge commitment
I say this as a dog owner

So they somehow got an unplanned pregnancy between a good pedigree sire and their bitch? Hmm

Tell me more about dachshunds.

A friend of DB, his parents have rescue dachshunds and he says they can be very snappy and barky.

OP posts:
Lifeetc · 01/04/2024 18:48

Dachshunds can have also have health issues too due to elongated backs and stubby legs

Mumofyellows · 01/04/2024 18:49

As an owner of two labs who are my world of course I wouldn't turn it down 🤣 but it obviously depends on your circumstances and if you think you have the time and desire to deal with an energetic pup and all that comes with that. We have had one pup who was quite hard work with lots of mouthing, hard to toilet train, where as the most recent pup we had was a dream, you just never know. You've got to go with your gut, even though it's free there's a lot of time and expense to come with a puppy.

unsurebut · 01/04/2024 18:49

VERY odd that they're offering for free. I can't get my head around why they would do that?! If it was an unplanned litter, are you sure that they are definitely pure Labrador?

Jettyspaghetti · 01/04/2024 18:51

Labs are just the best- but if it's not the right time and the right dog it's a massive commitment.
We have a 7 month old lab and he still chews-he can't be left at home for any amount of time really. (He goes to work and has a massive open top crate/pen, and people to interact with, he gets taken for wee breaks and walks- but when he gets bored he chews his bed, his blanket, his towel anything he can get hold of). He is so much better than he was 3 months ago, but it's a long road.

And the smells they make- oh my days! I've never smelt anything like it.

According to my SIL, their NDN has a black stud lab. This female wasn’t spayed and don’t think they were planning to breed. The male dog apparently got onto their land where the bitch was and they mated and they had no idea she was pregnant until she started showing signs of pregnancy.

I mean they’re lucky it wasn’t any old mongrel!

Reasons for free are we are good family friends. I think the friend thinks we will have them see the son (my nephew) a lot.

Plus her dad is wealthy, despite selling the others for £2K each!

OP posts:
TeaKitten · 01/04/2024 18:53

You don’t get a dog because ‘it’s a freebie’. Can you comfortably afford the dog and all the vet related costs? Can you give it the proper time it deserves? What happens to it when your in the office?

Riverlee · 01/04/2024 18:54

So are they offering them for free, or for 2k? It seems odd if they are offering them for free, if they get two thousand pounds per pup.

Are they kc registered? Are both mum and dad pedigrees? Hiw did the unplanned pregnancy happen (not the bird and bees) ie Was it an accidental-deliberate pregnancy ? Seems a bit to good to be true.

Definitely pure lab. Got all papers, KC registered.

Having had both, labs are incredibly biddable and easily trained. Wonderful family dogs. Dachshunds however are virtually untrainable. Both have poss health issues (hips for labs, backs for dachs). I now have labs and wouldn't be without them but size wise, they are almost another whole person in your family. You might need to think about transport - can your car fit everyone (plus stuff that you also need)? A walk of an hour and a half daily should do it for a lab btw.

They are selling the other pups for £2k each but offering us a pup each for free.

See other info which I’ve already answered.

The friend is very generous. Plus she’s known SIL since primary school.
