First chapter reading books for 6 year old

Does anyone have any suggestions for moving away from scheme books and onto longer books?

Daughter is year 1 and has a reading age of 8 years old.

She is bored of the school books but they insist on continuing phonic books.

We read all the biff, chip and kipper books to the end and she enjoyed the storyline and adventures.

She also enjoys isadora moon and animal ark but they are too wordy for her to read independently yet. We do take turns reading pages of these for her bedtime story which she enjoys.

Is there anything a little shorter/more broken up that will plug the gap?

She is a voracious reader and want to encourage this and understanding matches reading ability.

Obviously we go to the library but its tricky to tell from spine and covers how difficult the text will be.

I've ordered Billie b brown, magic treehouse and the time chronicles.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Also the usbourne first readers are decent stories and you can also get non fiction books from them if she has some topics she is interested in.

Another thing we did when our eldest was just starting chapter books was get the kindle version of a book then you can enlarge the text. We found the smaller writing sometimes put him off but if it was enlarged he was more keen to read it. He read the first few Harry Potter books like that.

Mine loved Isadora Moon, and Mirabel. Highly recommend. Very beautiful books with cute illustrations and fab characters, the author is Harriet Muncaster, I believe she's done a mermaid series now too but mine have moved on.

ladygindiva · 01/04/2024 19:43

Sorry just realised you said Isadora Moon not ready for yet. Teach me to read the whole op. Sorry.

LeonoraFlorence · 01/04/2024 19:44

Perhaps a bit too easy now but my DDs enjoyed Isadora Moon and later, The Worst Witch series. Have kept them for smaller DDs too.

bbn81 · 01/04/2024 19:44

Mine loved billy and the mini monsters, Jasper and Scruff and recently found a couple about puffin rescue, can't remember the actual titles.

Littlepixie85 · 01/04/2024 19:45

My 6 year old has a similar reading ability and absolutely inhales the Daisy and the Trouble with series. There's lots of them, and you can get them cheap on Vinted. Also Isadora Moon and the Mummy Fairy and Me books. It's so lovely watching her getting absorbed in a book!

CaliforniaHereWeCome1 · 01/04/2024 19:47

The Claude books are cute, and Shifty McGifty.

TellerTuesday · 01/04/2024 19:51

DD was similar at that age and we had success with The Princess in Black series and the Unipigle books. She also liked a series about a pug, think it was 'The Pug who wanted to be a xxx'

Dearover · 01/04/2024 19:55

I was also going to suggest Daisy by Kes Gray (?) The character may already be familiar which helps with trickier words as you can imagine what Daisy would say or do.

Getoutgetout · 01/04/2024 19:55

Check out Princess Minna books. My 5 year old reads fluently but loves these as they’re so colourful and not loads of words on a page. Good stories too. We have Isadora Moon too but similar to you it’s got too many words for her to read independently even though she can read it if that makes sense.

rainbow fairy books are also ok

MargaretThursday · 01/04/2024 19:55

Has she discovered the never-ending Rainbow Fairies yet?

Mine liked:
Naughty Little Sister
Milly Molly Mandy
Bullerby Children
Faraway Tree

All of those the chapters are individual stories which made it easy for them to feel like they'd achieved a story rather than leaving it hanging.

Those also a whole set of "Magic Kitten" and "Magic Puppy" that one of mine loved, but they are a whole book story.

My dc is in reception and is also struggling with phonics books as he finds them so boring and easy. I'm going to save these ideas for when he is a bit further on with his reading but may start buying some now.

LittleBluePenguinisaFairy · 01/04/2024 20:01

Twitchy witch, pizzazz, bunny Vs monkey, tom gates, max & chaffy, the rainbow fairy books, little legends, dragon girls, owl diaries, Dave the pigeon.

HumptyBumpty · 01/04/2024 20:02

My DD loved the the Sophie series of books by Dick King-Smith

NameChange30 · 01/04/2024 20:02

Enid Blyton Faraway Tree Adventures - they are colour illustrated and each book is a few chapters from the original book, which makes them more accessible.

And all these are series:
Billy and the Mini Monsters
Wigglesbottom Primary (I found these boring but DC really liked them!)
The Secret Explorers
Toto the Ninja Cat
An Alien in the Jam Factory

PickledMumion · 01/04/2024 20:04

Sam Wu books (and when she's a bit older, the Dragon Realm series by the same authors is awesome).

Mine have all loved comic book style, like 13 storey tree house, dogman, captain underpants etc.

QuirkyBrickSwan · 01/04/2024 20:06

There is a series called faraway tree adventures that has broken down the faraway tree into individual stories with beautiful illustrations. My daughter is the same, very strong reader but put off by lots of small text and she loves these.
I also got her the penguin reader books Matilda and Charlie and the chocolate factory. They are abridged versions designed for people learning English but they are a great way for her to read the stories in a less wordy form.

CherryBrandies · 01/04/2024 20:06

If Isadora Moon is too wordy, she's not really at chapter book level, though. They are pretty much as simple as chapter books get. It sounds as though she needs to develop her ability a bit first.

Notjustabrunette · 01/04/2024 20:07

Jill Tomlinson books are good for that age. She wrote the owl who was afraid of the dark.

Caravaggiouch · 01/04/2024 20:08

I can’t stand those sodding Rainbow Fairy books but my year 1 DD absolutely loves them and will happily read chapter after chapter to me.

Ihaveneedofwaternear · 01/04/2024 20:11

Just marking my place to come back to this thread, lots of good suggestions

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 01/04/2024 20:13

Claude books & the Mr Penguin books are good for this age.

Second wrigglesworth primary (& there are others by Pamela buchart just take care as some are for older readers).

13 storey treehouse books.

Flat Stanley. Jill Tomlinson. DS read lots of the oldfield brothers’ football books in y1 but that’s a bit niche!
