How do interrail tickets work?

I mean, I've read the website but is it really worth doing? The seat reservations are throwing me a bit.

Planning on going paris to Switzerland to Italy to France.

I'm torn whether to book independently or go with interrailing.

Worried that I'll be somewhat fettered rather than helped by a Eurail ticket.

Has anyone experience of interrailing?

For some countries where the railways are cheaper then I don’t think it’s worth it. You could easily spend more money buying interrailing tickets; the requirement to book would be annoying.
I think I’d work out where I wanted to go and price it up both ways.

Hi, we have just returned from three weeks interrailing. Have you come across the website The Man in Seat 61? It is absolutely brilliant at explaining everything to do with rail travel. There is a section about interrailing.
It is true that for some trips you'd be better off paying for individual train tickets rather than an interrail pass, but you have to work that out yourself depending on exactly where, when, how you want to travel and how flexible you want to be for the possibility of changing plans mid trip. We didn't make seat reservations for any journey other than the Eurostar at the beginning and end of the holiday. I know there are some journeys on high speed trains where you have to reserve seats, but there are plenty of local and regional trains where you don't, and we took a chance even on trains that said "reservation recommended" and we never had trouble finding seats.
No idea how old you are (I'm 63) but there's also a really helpful facebook group called Interrailing for the older crowd, and I'm sure there are plenty of other fb groups too, eg I saw one called Interrailing with children, though I didn't look at that one so don't know how busy it is.
We had a great time, though in different countries from where you'd like to go ( Netherlands, Germany, Austria) Good luck.

I have interrailed many times. I recommend the man in seat62 and the FB group interrail & EU travelers for advice.

I don't recommend interrailing for the older crowd even though I am old myself as it is pro Brexit
