How do I tighten window handles?

Does anyone know how to tighten the actual handle, as in the bit you hold? It’s loose and wobbles a lot and I’m afraid it’s going to come off or be unable to close the window when I shut it after showering one night.
Every video I find is how to replace the whole handle or tighten the handle attachments to the frame rather than tighten the lever.
TIA

I’ve only got timber frames but when this happens I have to replace the whole handle . Don’t know if it’s different for upvc but should think you have to replace it.

Can you remove the plastic cover where the key is? On ours you can flip that off and there is a screw next to the keyhole which you can tighten.

@SleepingisanArt I ran up with my little tool kit optimistic it would be a quick fix, sadly no removable bit, the plastic is the bit that needs to be pressed in to turn the key.
As I feared @Hercules12 . I’ve a vague recollection of late DH replacing the handles a couple of years ago, I’m guessing that’s what I’ll have to do.

The inside might be worn. There's a bar that joins the handle through into the frame and it wears away in time. You can replace the handles quite easily.

Op - it feels more daunting than it is to change the handle. I’ve done a few and the biggest difficulty I had was sourcing mine as mine are dark brown for wood. Look on websites like screwfix, Toolstation, b and q, wickes etc at handles.

Thanks @Hercules12. I’m determined to give it a go and not pay a handyman. Good to know that it’s not going to be too tricky, I was a little fearful I’d not be capable and end up trying to gaffer tape my window shut 😂

Don’t pay someone op. YouTube videos are your friend here.

I desperately don’t want to pay! Every time I close the window I’m fearful it’s going to come off in my hand so I’m just looking on screwfix now.
I did try to prise one of the screw caps off to look but it wouldn’t budge. I will persevere.

I purchased some couple of months ago from screwfix nearly 10 quid each a load of rubbish didnt even last 3 months locking mechanism fell out . Bought yale ones from amazon for nearly a 3rd of price. Much better quality currently under 4 quid each

I have managed to swap out a bad double glazing handle for a good one so it is possible for a householder with no “training” to do it.

If in doubt, take a picture on your phone & go to Screwfix of Wickes or a double glazing company near you & ask for advice. In my experience, the assistants on the counters are very helpful & cheerful!

Back to report.
So, not as straightforward as I’d hoped unfortunately. The spindle absolutely would not fit and work my window latches!
I did just pull out the one from the old handles and used that, so they did work okay in the end, but even screwing them to the window was an ordeal. I could screw one screw in but then the handle wouldn’t move/open so I could do the other screw. I have no idea why it was all so difficult when I could see how easy it was supposed to be. I ended up screwing, then unscrewing, then re screwing each handle on half a dozen times before I could sort them all.
However, they are done now and I’m feeling chuffed I didn’t have to call any one.

I’m now busy googling how to change washing machine brushes, that’s a job DH always did that I will now have to do myself too.

How do you know when they need replacing?

I'm waiting for a new heating element to arrive. Maybe I should do both jobs at the same time?

ImWatching · 14/04/2024 19:24

The brushes? @ThisOldThang
Usually we find out when the machine is full of water, it’s making all the right noises, but the drum won’t spin round.

I'm that case, i don't think mine need doing.
