Matress buying

Help me choose a new mattress? I can't decide which one to buy infact I know nothing about matresses but we need a new one. I have terrible back ache when I get up, hips are sore and even my legs are sore. I'm sure it's my mattress. It's quite old and and very springy if that makes sense. Me and my DH are not small people and It feels like we fall into in the middle and it's just so uncomfortable. But I don't know what kind and type to buy. I'm conscious of spending loads of money and then still being in pain and uncomfortable! I only have a budget of about £300 so I'm really struggling especially when I don't know what to look for. The budget can be stretched slightly also I need it now. I ant wait six weeks for it to arrive. I'm losing sleep because it's so terrible.

For £300 suggest looking on FB marketplace for a good quality secondhand one that's less than 5 years old. Or going to ikea as they got a good report on here when I was looking for a new mattress

I would NEVER buy a mattress without trying it out first... And wouldn't buy second-hand. Go to a shop where you are encouraged to lie on them, ensure that the mattress is on the same kind of base as your own bed (platform, sprung, slat, metal rods etc.) And if you share your bed with somebody else, test the mattress out together.

finally - be prepared for it to be very expensive!

Test it out in a shop to get an idea of what you like and then buy it online. It’s about a third cheaper and delivery usually within a week

Mattress buying is such a pain. Even trying them on store isn't fool proof, at least for us. We once bought a second mattress from a place we used before, we tried it in store but the 2nd one was no where near as good as the first and my back was so bad as a result. We just don't spend much time on them in store.

For our latest mattress we chose the bed in a box type. You can't try these in store but they have excellent return policies so it's actually much better than trying in store a you get to sleep on it for a while.

£300 is pretty limited. One of my favourite mattresses ever came from IKEA so like a pp said, you might try there first. Another suggestion would be both to save up and to wait for a sale so that you're getting the best you can.

IKEA would be my recommendation too, to fit with your budget and delivery requirements.

I mean I have the money to spent more than ,£300 but I don't really want to. I really need something soon because I am in PAIN. Relentlessly and I'm sure it's my mattress. DH finds it uncomfortable too. I can barely walk when I get up in the morning due to the pain.

Memory foam on Ebay are very affordabe. Either a mattress or a topper. Choose carefully what depth you need as there are many options.

You may both need to visit a physio to help you adjust to the new mattress. I had to go myself but luckily only needed to go twice. My body was simply unaccustomed to a decent mattress!
