Why is there such a big difference between Easter and Christmas?

Two of the biggest religious festivals here in the UK but it intrigues me how differently they are treated.

The fundamentals are the same, mostly. Spending time with family, a big meal, presents in the form of chocolate and treats.

But when I was out with the dog this morning, I was amazed at how busy the roads were and how many people were out and about.

I know the weather can be (is today) vastly different. A warm spring day vs the depths of winter, but even on a reasonably mild Christmas morning its never busy outside until you see people on their post-meal walk.

Why is it that the two religious days have different kinds of tradition? Is it just because of the nice weather and the fact the shops and other places are still open?

pretty much every culture celebrates the winter solstice. It’s cold, dark, and scary. A festival helps the community. The current incarnation in many countries happens to be called Christmas and is associated with a religion, but it’s still really just the solstice no matter how people dress it up.

spring festivals just aren’t as big of a deal. That some people celebrate a religious festival is largely left to the people who want to celebrate a religious festival. Everyone else can do a little something fun and silly if they want, but the human need to celebrate the arrival of spring just isn’t as strong.

The Easter that Christians celebrate was originally a Jewish festival, Pesach/Passover( still is). Jesus had gone to Jerusalem to celebrate it when he was crucified .

True. Easter is not the appropriation of a pagan holiday at all. In most languages other than English, the name for the observance is a derivation of "pascal." For reasons lost in antiquity, the name in English (and German, I believe) is based on the name of a goddess, but the observation is Christian (and to some extent Jewish; the Last Supper was a Passover seder) in origin.

That's a good question OP but I don't know the answer.

Why is Christmas a whole season but Easter is just a weekend?

Why don't pop singers sing songs about Easter?

Why do we have work Christmas parties but not work Easter parties?

Why are we expected to buy new clothes and party frocks for Christmas, but not for Easter?

Why is there so much pressure to meet up with all and sundry in the run up to/over the Christmas, but we don't need to do this for Easter?

I just hope Easter stays as it is, and nobody messes around with it.

More good questions. You're totally right, I can't think of any Easter songs sung by any popstars. Not like the Michael Bublé, George Michael, and Mariah Careys of Christmas.

I agree with you, I like Easter exactly how it is and wouldn't want it to be more like Christmas Smile

They’re not really the same at all, totally different traditions and cultural significance. I don’t know anybody who puts the same traditional significance on Easter as Christmas, I’m single and live alone and people always ask what I’m doing for Christmas and respond with pity when I say nothing. Nobody feels the same about Easter or asks what I’m doing, Easter is just a slightly vamped up Sunday, it’s only recently that it’s been commercialised in terms of presents. When I was young we literally just got a couple of chocolate eggs, nothing else, it really wasn’t a big deal.

Me too! I'm also single and live alone, and Christmas was weeks of my colleague jokingly teasing about "your one cracker, and your one mince pie, and your one serving of turkey", but nobody has bothered to even ask what my Easter plans are Grin

I’ve never considered Easter to be a family time like Christmas.

PuttingDownRoots · 31/03/2024 15:44

Christmas is now a secular as well as religious festival

Beyond children and Easter eggs, Easter itself is only celebrated by active Christians.

They were both secular festivals long before Christianity came along.

I thought that the ships had to close on Easter Sunday? Apart from the small ones.

cordeliachaseatemyhandbag · 31/03/2024 18:34

Christmas was always a big deal growing up- tree, cards, presents, off work, big extended family meal etc etc

Easter was just a nice long weekend.
Never did cards or decorations or a big meal. Just one egg for a child.

In my small town everything is open, all the pubs and cafes and restaurants and shops (which are admittedly only small). I think only the big supermarkets on town outskirts have shut. Totally different vibe to Christmas Day when literally nothing is open, not even the petrol station.

What? That makes no sense. He was dead?

I’ve had 3 Royal Mail deliveries today that weren’t expected until Tuesday. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve had an Amazon parcel.

ExSJA · 31/03/2024 18:43

Same. I sort of expected Amazon to be delivering, Royal Mail don’t usually on a Sunday!

singingthypraises · 31/03/2024 18:45

@Terrribletwos um, what? You're showing a massive lack of understanding. No he wasn't dead until the Friday (Good Friday) and rose again on the Sunday (Easter Sunday) Hence a 'last' supper- He wasn't dead at the last supper. The last supper is what we take part in at Mass and his words there are why we believe the Eucharist is the body of Christ. This varies slightly for Protestant denominations who view it as a symbol rather than a true presence but the reasoning is overall the same.

Spendonsend · 31/03/2024 18:45

Well the lead up to christmas is advent, which is fun. Wheras the lead up to easter is lent and good friday with confession and which is not fun.

So, to make a long story short: a long time ago the Jewish people were living in Egypt, working for the ruler (farao). The Jewish people (Israel) wanted to leave. Farao was reluctant, but finally let them go. Jews celebrate this at Passover/Pesach. Jesus went to Jerusalem to celebrate this festival. The "partymeal" (seder) is what Christians call ,"the last supper" and this is this is the origin of holy communion.
After the last supper Jesus was arrested and crucified (Good Friday) and rose on the third day (Easter Sunday).
Does that make sense?

lpylou · 31/03/2024 19:03

Can't answer why but it sure is different. Many posters have mentioned the set date for Christmas, this means from 1st December the fanfare starts, advent calendars, the big countdown, Christmas trees and decorations, lots of shopping and festive season social activities spike. I prefer Christmas as it's a nice time with friends too, not just family. It's also the end of the year so signals a time to reflect. It has more days off, 3 public holidays and 2 weekends, meaning a lot of people take the 'filler' days in between. Whereas Easter is expensive to go away and there's not enough going on to warrant 10 days off at home,

FuzzyPuffling · 31/03/2024 19:03

I'm a Christian and am having a wonderful Easter. Church this morning for a very uplifting service - the Christian community is at its most cheerful, especially if you have also observed Good Friday - and a roast dinner later.
And now it's not Lent any more I can have chocolate.

He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

it starts a lot earlier than 1st December!

HelenHywater · 31/03/2024 19:05

My very catholic friend always treats this as a big an event as Christmas. Possibly bigger as she always goes to Rome.

Today I've treated it like Christmas (without the presents). It's been lovely. All the children, lots of games, cooking and chocolate. it's been so nice.

Spendonsend · 31/03/2024 18:45

Only in secular terms - in the church calendar Advent is very much a season of preparation and prayer, rather than daily chocolate and parties!

concernedchild · 31/03/2024 19:07

I think it's just the time of year. It comes so soon after Christmas, but also nobody is exhausted yet. It's just a pause on work for those lucky enough to not work, and time to spring clean, sort your life out and refresh before work. It's not as much time off as Christmas

frozendaisy · 31/03/2024 19:08

If we were smart we would make Christmas less commercial like Easter rather than trying to make Easter more commercial like Christmas.

But we are not smart.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 31/03/2024 19:13

Interesting point. I went to the gym this morning and wouldn’t go on Xmas day. The shops here are closed which I’m pleased about but I was surprised
