Frozen leg of lamb

So… we were meant to go to my parents for lunch but they have had to cancel this morning due to a vomiting bug.

I have a leg of lamb in the freezer am I able to cook this for today? From frozen? Defrost in cold water? Any advice gratefully received!

I’m in the same situation. Forgot to take it out of the freezer last night.

Hopefully someone will help us!

I doubt it. I took a half leg of lamb to my mum's the other day and it wasn't defrosted until the next morning. Maybe take it out and do Easter Monday lunch instead?

Yes you can cook a lamb of leg from frozen, lots of good recipes online. Will taste exactly the same as fresh. I do it a lot.

It will take a while to defrost, but yes - put it in a large washing-up bowl full of tepid water, and change the water every time it goes stone cold, which will be about every 10 minutes to start with.

Then when it is thawed, make sure you blast it in a really hot oven for about 30 minutes to get it going, then turn down to normal temperature. Doing that will warm up the bone at the thin end, which will carry heat through to the middle of the thick end.

Quite glad I remembered to take mine out of the freezer on Friday morning actually.

I've never had to do this with a frozen turkey on Christmas morning, oh no, not me...

I'd pop to the shops and get another joint.

Not many shops open though surely?

Got a Cook lamb joint and had to defrost it for 48 hours....sorry 😢

WitchyMoo · 31/03/2024 10:42

I wouldn't in the oven unless it states cook from frozen. Only because it could go very tough and burn before the middle cooked and wouldnt get a safe temperature
Maybe slow cook in loads of stock in a slow cooker 9 hours? That's what id do personally

PrimalLass · 31/03/2024 11:00

I'm defrosting a chicken in the micro just now but also have a defrost setting on my oven: you could put it in at the very lowest temp.

Tuilipcity · 31/03/2024 11:48

Thanks all! I have found a smaller half leg and have gone for that in cold water.. fingers crossed!

Mine was frozen (but remembered to defrost) and on the back said cook from frozen was an option. I would just cook it on a low heat so it's thoroughly cooked.

dottydodah · 31/03/2024 12:04

I have a lamb joint too .Have defrosted it ,but note it says on packaging can be cooked from frozen . So you will be safe

TonTonMacoute · 31/03/2024 12:51

Of course you can cook it from frozen! It takes longer and you have to make sure it's cooked all the way through.

I once bought a frozen leg of lamb and it had the instructions on how to do this on the label.
