Eczema in ears! Driving me potty.

I have inherited this from my mum, my brother has it too. Only started in the last year and it's so uncomfy.

I have no eczema anywhere else but just in the entrance of my ear canal and it continually flakes and itches. It looks awful and the flakes are embarrassing.

I've tried; diprobase, balmonds ointment and epaderm ointment.

Nothing really helps except for just stopping it from getting wet in the shower as I know that exacerbates it.

I've also put manuka honey on it when it bleeds - which helps heal but not stop the dryness.

Any recommendations are welcome - I prefer natural products but I'm willing to try medicated.

Thank you!

Coconut oil?

OMGitsnotgood · 30/03/2024 20:23

Olive oil - the pure kind you get from the chemist, not a supermarket

Steroids are the only thing that will help.

Steroids are the only thing that will help.

Or a protopic

Naughty1205 · 30/03/2024 20:40

Steroid and/or protopic

I got an amazing spray from the GP last year for my itchy ears and it worked instantly. They're bad again and I wish I'd kept a note of what it was rather than having to go back to the GP for another prescription

melissasummerfield · 30/03/2024 20:54

I have had this for 10 years and it is utterly miserable

trimovate cream ( prescription ) works to some degree

Cheeesus · 30/03/2024 20:55

DH gets flaky ears and it isn’t actually eczema, it’s something with a fungal origin (possibly sebhoreic dermatitis). In any case, Nizoral shampoo sorts it out.

Hydrocortisone 1% from a pharmacy. Put it on an earbud and gently use it to apply the cream to the entrance to the ear canal without going into to ear.
Works a treat. Lifelong ear eczema sufferer here.

Coconut oil?

None of that really sorts it. I’m under ENT for this and have microsuction every 3 months. The consultant also prescibed me Betnovate scalp application to be used as drops .Its life changing.
I also use epiderm in the tiny pump to keep the ear moisturised. Don’t use cotton buds.

Naytr33 · 30/03/2024 21:03

It is eczema.

ChrissyHynde · 30/03/2024 21:15

I thought it was only me ! I've been prescribed betnovate for my scalp but have found a small drop (rubbed in) in each ear has been enough to clear it, sympathies, it drives me nuts and is do itchy

Jennalong · 30/03/2024 21:16

I've currently been prescribed Daktacort Cream which is a hydrocortisone / antifungal cream which seems to be working , also I'm putting epiderm cream on several times a day.

Mrbumpssmile · 30/03/2024 21:17

Pure argan oil can help mine, but steroid cream is the only thing that actually gets rid of it.

Mrbumpssmile · 30/03/2024 21:19

I must be very odd, because I've had mine my whole life and I actually like it, as long as it's not too dry.

Same here.
Lifelong sufferer.
Oils and creams might help a tiny bit but only steroid cream gives genuine relief.
Obviously you have to use as little as possible. I find if I use it about every 10 days it just about keeps it under control.
I also have on prescription some prednisolone ear drops as a last resort

Hopebridge · 30/03/2024 21:20

Earcalm from the doctor. It's a spray.

I second this. Sometimes it gets infected and I need Otomize spray, but usually the hydrocortisone does the trick.

Naytr33 · 30/03/2024 21:23

Earcalm is for infections and steroid cream
won’t get further than your outer ear.

You can buy earcalm OTC, but I find it a bit useless.

Naytr33 · 30/03/2024 21:23

The betonvate scalp drops are the best.

EmbracingTheGrey · 30/03/2024 21:24

I had this for years and years. Drove me mad. Agree that steroids were the only thing that really kept it under control for a while. Earcalm was sometimes helpful. If desperate, a dab of apple cider vinegar! But just wanted to mention that mine disappeared completely when I started taking HRT. Bizarre!

Naytr33 · 30/03/2024 21:24

Earcalm isn’t for eczema.

AlliumFairy · 30/03/2024 21:26

Thank you for that, it could be a game changer. I already have the scalp lition on prescription.
