Dental Implant Pain

Sandringham8 · 30/03/2024 18:33

I'm day 3 from having three dental implants inserted and I'm in relentless pain. The swelling is starting to go down considerably but all of my teeth are aching including the implanted teeth.
Any idea how much longer I have of this as I'm currently feeling nauseous from scoffing down the neurofen and paracetamol. My face is also getting itchy from having an ice pack glued to me for the past 72 hours. Any advice would be gratefully received as I'm feeling very down about it all.

I read somewhere that a dental implant is in the top three most painful surgeries to recover from. BUT that said, since 2010 I've had five implants and never have I experienced what you're describing. Were you given precautionary anti biotics? You might have an infection.

Sandringham8 · 30/03/2024 18:56

No, no antibiotics. The implantologist said he avoids issuing them out as a precautionary as he thinks they interfere with the healing processes. Everything I have read online says otherwise and now I'm buggered until Tuesday as the surgery is shut till then.

Ah ok. I've been given them every time I've had an implant done. Maybe try phoning your surgery anyway, they might have a number for emergencies.

I had an implant in October. What day did you have it done?

thedendrochronologist · 30/03/2024 20:19

I've just looked back and had it done Saturday and was out of action until Thursday off work.

I had the extraction in December and it was horrendous - I went straight back to work teaching and managed two days before going home for the last two days before Xmas and took me a full week to recover. Because I have to talk so
Much for my job made it much worse.
With that in mind planned the surgery for the Saturday and went back to work Thursday so day 6z

I was fine after that.

Use: Ibuprofen, bonjela. Ora-jel co codalmol and difflam oral rinse. Hot pack and cold pack

I was effectively in bed for the whole time recovering. (Well on the sofa)

I had the implants put in late Wednesday and am on day three .Prior to having them done and reading historic Mumsnet threads, the general concesus seemed to be that the recovery process will be a doddle. For me personally it's been awful and I have been in bed for three days not knowing what to do with myself. Although I had a molar and two pre-molar teeth done, the whole row of my incisor teeth are hurting which doesn't make sense.
If I had my time again, I would have had the each implant done on individual days.

I'm switching heat pads and taking ibuprofen and paracetamol.

Are we talking just the screw in the jaw or an all in one implant with the fake tooth too? The screw in the jaw shouldn’t be awful on its own. Tooth on top is worse as you’re putting pressure on it.

I was given antibiotics when I had my implant done. I was told that I'd look as though I'd been hit by a baseball bat, but it really wasn't that bad. (Front tooth.)

Yes, there should be an emergency number.

OP, I sympathise with you. I had an implant and was in unbelievable pain afterwards for at least a week. It was awful and has put me off having a second, which I need.

thedendrochronologist · 30/03/2024 20:53

Did they put the crown on too or just the implant?

thedendrochronologist · 30/03/2024 20:54

I hope it settles down soon. Try those other things I suggested and try and contact dentist- I'd email as it might be seen

Just the screw for now. The actual procedure was unpleasant but not agonising but since the anesthetic has worn off I've been utterly miserable.

Yes I will do, thank you.

I had one done under sedation and was prepared for a week off work!

You have been through the mill and had three screws drilled into your skull and by the sounds of it without sedation!

Difam oral rinse helps. Rinse gently

Ring 111 of you feel worse or fever/temp

Really unlucky with the four day bank hols

You have got this!

I was expecting it to be awful and it wasn’t (unlike the abscesses and extraction that came before!). Mine was a molar if that makes a difference. I hope it improves soon.
