How much do you have in your personal savings? Does it feel enough to you?

We have joint savings which are decent but in my own savings I have just 3 grand and I just can't add any more to it really right now.

I think I'd feel more comfortable with 10k and it made me wonder what you would consider a decent amount that was just for you?

Far too little for what I need.

The house I bought 2 years ago has issues which will take thousands to fix, but some short-term repairs had to come first and between that, a cheap replacement car when my last one was totalled and a pest controller my savings have gone.

Slowly building something up again, but I am a single parent and cannot chuck much at it every month. So it all takes a long time and I dread the day my car gives out.

People with 5 k and less how do you buy a car with no saving?

I've currently got 4 saved because car is on its last legs and I'm worried about having to buy a new car

But our windows are blown, front door really needs replacing, big issue with our loo I'm scared to investigate! And other things like dc want to go on really expensive school trip next year and so on with uni looming.

How does anyone afford stuff. We also desperately need a new outdoor table and chairs it's literally rotten and wood falling off.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have to get bank loans to fund cars and house repairs. As soon as I pay one off I have to get another one. Have you tried Gumtree for outdoor table and chairs?

A couple of hundred because I recently used my savings to set dd up in her own home.

Have £5k secret premium bonds

MountCaramel · 13/04/2024 08:22

£2.5k was £3.5k but I had a few big expenditures lately so need to work extra shifts to replace it. I would like more savings because of emergencies and to off set the cost of living expenses.

JMAngel1 · 13/04/2024 08:38

Well this morning I had 27.5k but now I have 15K as I paid the final instalment to a house renovation. Worth every penny.
I would rather not touch the remainder so I’ve just started a new account for saving for a big family holiday next year.

LaMariposa · 13/04/2024 08:42

I have my pensions, a work one and a SIPP, I pay 15% of my gross income into them. I've £200 for next years holiday which is from ebay/vinted sales, and about £2k in premium bonds.
Also a huge mortgage, so any extea spare cash goes to that.

Remmy123 · 13/04/2024 08:45

3k that would end up paying for a holiday

I used to be so good at saving when I was younger 😬

I bought a very cheap 3 cylinder Skoda when mine died. It doesn't sound great and is a slug over 50mph, but was under £3k and is very reliable.

Check out your local freecycle group for garden furniture, there's always loads being given away.

We've lived with a blown window for 3 years now, ugly but not a priority. Plumbing on the other hand is, water damage can be ££)

suntannedsnowballsinhell · 13/04/2024 10:04

£170k in savings
2 properties worth around £750k

If it helps, I'm miserable. Money does not equal happiness

sleepyscientist · 13/04/2024 10:18

In easy access cash savings around 10k, we then have pots for an extension/renovations (60% of target), investment (10% as want to finish our house), DS's future house deposit or seed money and holidays currently zero as just paid ours off. We have company pensions which I don't really look at.

We like a buffer for unexpected large expenses like car engine rebuilds!! But things like a new washer etc could just come out of the current month's money. Other than that I would rather enjoy it's we are only here for a short time.

It feels like an enough and we are lucky to be in this position it wasn't like this 10 years ago.

RightOnTheEdge · 13/04/2024 10:35

I have £135 in savings. Single parent so it's all mine.
It definitely doesn't feel like enough but it's more than I had saved at the beginning of the year so that's good.

I don't have a car because I can't afford to drive Sad

And no it doesn't make me feel better that someone who is loaded is miserable.

1, because I don't want to take pleasure in someone else's misery.
2, because being miserable and rich is still a million times better than being miserable and poor.

Cofaki · 13/04/2024 10:37

We only have joint savings. We've got about 20k at the moment which feels ok.

Tarquina · 18/04/2024 17:25

wandawaves · 12/04/2024 11:39

I guess I mean, what is it planned to be spent on? Like is it for a house deposit, or retirement, or is it just a really substantial 'in case of emergency' fund?

Oh I see. I've never had a plan for it. it just accumulated organically, by accident really as my outgoings are low and my income high. It's a bit of a problem now as I am elderly and have nobody to leave it to.

K0OLA1D · 18/04/2024 17:38

£351.83

We are ridiculously fortunate in that my parents bought us a car and gave us a house deposit or we'd still be renting and running a £500 old banger.

Our savings are currently £6k as we're still in the paying for childcare stage and don't have a lot left to save at the end of the month. Still feel pretty lucky though.

SingingSands · 18/04/2024 19:33

Nothing. I was saving specifically for garden and house renovations, which have completed. Back to square one and starting again this month.
