why does no one talk about magnetic L plates damaging car paint work??

the magnetic L plates have taken the shine off my daughter's car. I have looked online/in forums and there are people saying the same.bbut all the replies are along the lines of...'the rest of the car has faded' or 'moisture is trapped'. presumably these responders passed their test a while ago and haven't seen what people are taking about...the shiny surface has been removed, leaving squares of dulled paintwork

does anyone here know what I mean/why isn't this well known/how to bloody fix it without an expensive respray?? 😭😭😭

If I was leaving them on full time I'd have the sort you stick inside the window or tie to the grill, otherwise I'd be worried about them getting nicked while it was parked.

ah ok, so it seems it is a user problem!! 😬 we kept them on all the time because she had bought her own car. she did all the driving everywhere whilst she was learning, for practice. so we never took them off. lesson learned!

You obviously live in a very nice area. Anything not tied down is nicked here. I know someone had their magnetic L plates nicked while they were sat in the car!

Car paint has been changed for environmental reasons and isn't near as tough as years ago but either way nothing magnetic should be left on longterm. We use magnetic lights etc in tow truck business but remove them ASAP.

I thought the point of the magnetic ones was that you only put them on when needed and then take them off again , that’s what we did .

Couldn't think of anything less interesting to talk about tbh

NotTerfNorCis · 06/07/2024 19:54

I've got this problem. Had L plates on for six months, no problem. Put on a P plate, and noticed after quite some time that there was a misty patch under it. My OH advised me to move it to another spot and before long it had created an even worse misty patch! I've also Googled it. Some sites recommend gently warming it with a hair dryer to release trapped moisture. Others say it'll go away by itself (doesn't seem to be). Or the solution might need to be a respray.

I don't think we had magnetic ones 30 years ago, did we?? I learned to drive late 80s and we didn't then

Yes, we did.

Skybluepinky · 06/07/2024 20:00

Shocked u didn’t know, I had tie on ones as even 20 years ago everyone knew not to use magnetic ones.

HappiestSleeping · 06/07/2024 20:00

@Crackalac This is what I did with a similar kit. You can see the left is all faded, and the right side is all shiny.

You're supposed to take them off after use. It only takes seconds to put them on before a drive.

Take them on and off each time, that's the beauty of magnetic. Didn't ruin the paintwork when my dc had them on.
