How to clear/tidy my bedroom

Rhoticity · 30/03/2024 11:06

I have a lot of stuff

I'm trying to get rid of, and stop buying, but what I'd like to do is have a clear and tidy bedroom, like they do in TV shows and films

How??

Obviously I need to get rid of more stuff, but how do I streamline and get a sense of calm?

How much built in storage do you have? You can certainly declutter, but aiming for a bedroom from a film set might be a bit unrealistic!

TV shows and films are not real life. Imaginary people don't need stuff: spare clothes, spare bedding, skincare products, medications, etc.

Something I've learned from interiors magazines is that space between things is OK. I've stopped trying to fill every wall with pictures or other detail. It let's the nice stuff you have shine and IMHO is the secret to the sense of calm you.have referred to.

I always think bedrooms in films look really cluttered

Marie Kondo - I got some great tips from that book

Really good storage solutions

If you don't love it, or need it - it goes

Take everything out of wardrobe/drawers. Only put back what you really love or really need. Pile to sell on Vinted/eBay, pile for charity, pile for bin

I have an uncluttered bedroom/house, BUT I don't have children and only live with one other person, DH. We also have the luxury of a seperate dressing room - it's too grand a title for what it is but the previous owners built on top of the garage adding an office and shower room, we didn't need the office and as an insomniac I like to keep the bedroom as simple as possible. I can keep my toiletries and do my make up in the bathroom, there's a built in old airing cupboard that stores towels, bedding and suitcases, and we have wide (narrow) bedside tables. Can you take everything out and only put back in the things that have to be there? I think the question "would I choose this now?" helps in letting things go.

We are heading into spring/summer

So a good start, even if it's just to tackle at a later date, would be to clean, dry and box/bag up anything that is for deep darkest winter and pack away. That could be in suitcase under bed, loft, anywhere but get it out of your day to day bedroom living space.

Then threw away any clothes that cannot be worn by anyone again. Worn, holes etc.

Then look at what you wear.

Any clothes not your size? Too big/small.
Realistically think are you ever going to be able to wear them again? Get rid of you won't.

Throw away out of date toiletries and cosmetics or even stuff you just don't like.

Clean the windows.
Open windows

Change bed

Hoover

Get a nice bedside lamp

Get rid of books you have read and won't read again and ones you just won't read. You can usually get novels from library if the need arises.

Thanks all!

Some really helpful ideas here

And also recognising that film / TV is not real

You sound a bit like me OP. The rest of the house is clear, it's the bedroom which is the danger zone. I bought storage boxes but they're sitting taking up yet more space 🤣

I think the way I'm going to tackle it is metre by metre so my first task is just by the door. That will give me wriggle room for the other areas.

Report back! When you get started you'll be surprised at how much can be done. It doesn't need to be pristine just clearer so you know where everything is and any rubbish is gone.
