Passport checks France-Switzerland train

Has anyone recently travelled from France to Switzerland by train? Do you know whether there are passport checks on the train?

Thanks so much in advance to anyone with any knowledge/experience on this!

No checks as both in Schengen.

Thank you!

We've had our passports checked between France and Italy several times. They also said they were going to do it when we got the train from Germany to Switzerland (again at the Italian border), although they didn't, so never say never!

No passport checks but we were checked on arrival on Switzerland, a bit like a ticket inspection, had the same thing going from France to Denmark.

I'd take some ID to be relaxed

BingoFucklinger · 29/03/2024 16:21

Thanks everyone.

The issue is my son's passport only has 2.5 months left on it rather than the required 3 months. My daughter and I flew out today and we're desperately trying to find a way for my husband and son to join us!

There is a border control checkpoint when you get off the train but it's rare to get checked. I live on the border and drive through French-Swiss customs several times a week. Theoretically they could stop us but it hardly ever happens unless they suspect you are smuggling. I have had my ID checked once on a cross border bus. ImO you'd be unlucky to get checked but it is by no means impossible.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 29/03/2024 17:42

Could they get a train to somewhere close on the FR side and then drive across in a French hire car?

I don't understand where your DS is starting from that means he can get to France, but is not able to get to Switzerland. Wherever he enters the Schengen area he will have his passport checked and will not be allowed in if he doesn't have three months left on it. Unless he doesn't need three months left on it, in which case he doesn't need three months for Switzerland either.

We've had ours checked in Switzerland. It was on a sleeper train from Italy-France. They woke us up in the middle of the night to do it.

Janek · 31/03/2024 13:13

Oh yes, that's happened to me too, now you mention it. But with it being in the middle of the night I have no idea whether it was the France-Switzerland or Switzerland-Italy border!

No specific advice but we were checked between Austria and Germany on the train.

Wtf

I was on a Zurich-Paris TGV and some officers went through between Zurich and Basel. Asked to see my passport and asked why I was in the country. Only one other passenger was questioned, she was told off (in English) about an out of date work permit or something.

Schengen means nothing now, when on a train between Austria and Germany it's now very common for it to be held at Freilassing while the police check the train, presumably looking for Albanians.

Yes, we showed our passports and they asked us a few questions but a young man sitting next to us who didnt have his passport with him was taken off the train. I dont think he was German or Austrian as his German wasnt very good but I dont know where he was from.
