Years ago we went to Alpbach in August. Yes, you can go up mountains and it’s lovely with flowers on the lower slopes and still snow at a high level. It rained for a few minutes every day at 4pm.

Kitzbuhel is stunning in the summer - it can get pretty hot but there are regular storms, normally around 4pm as PP said.

Lots of lovely mountain restaurants, walks, wild swimming, wildlife.

Achensee is really nice and has good transport links to Innsbruck. As bonus if you read the Chalet School books it's the location of the early ones.

fieldsofbutterflies · 29/03/2024 10:20

Haha no worries @SunshinDay.

We went every summer for years - it's really a beautiful area and there's plenty to do. There's an indoor pool with slides for rainy days and lots lovely cafes and restaurants to enjoy too.

There also day trips you can do to nearby towns etc. Grossglockner is a good day trip especially if you have children, and there's a little alpine park/zoo at Aurach which isn't too far away.

The Boeglerhof in Alpbach is lovely. Amazing food. Pretty village. Go cycling around and take gondolas up the mountain to hike. Nearby bathing lakes.

We had a fabulous family holiday in Hopfgarten some years ago. It's a ski resort so was significantly cheaper in the summer. Cable cars ran up the mountain, guided walks, traditional evening entertainment in the village, couple of nice restaurants, outdoor swimming complex with crazy golf and a cafe, transport links to bigger resorts etc. We stayed in a fabulous ski chalet above a bakery.
DC were 14 and 11 at the time. It was very hot on occasions with a couple of inevitable rain storms. It was great!

Oh yes, love the mountains - heaps of places - we love Mayrhofen - hotel Sport, great SPA, or Post has a beutifull outdoor swimming "pond" - mountain lifts, steam train, glacier miles and miles of walks - or Italian side is stunning - look up Corvara, more of a mountain lift and pasta vibe 😀.....off for a dream about next summer.....

SunshinDay · 29/03/2024 10:34

@fieldsofbutterflies brilliant I just happened upon a radom hotel on fb and it looked stunning.

I've always fancied mountains in summer and lakes to swim in, mountain tops...

Older dc now

Neu Post Hotel Mayrhofen - have a look at Inghams Summer Lakes and Mountains website for inspiration 😀

Agree with looking at Inghams lakes and mountains website. As well as inspiration, they often offer prices way cheaper that you could book independently.

Many ski resorts will operate lifts to access walks and glacier. Some will offer a pass including post-buses to guests. There are lakes for swimming, hiking trails, mountain restaurants, meadows, rivers, outdoor pools. Skischools may offer guided walks and activities like wild-water rafting and climbing. You do need to check dates carefully though. Some resorts open mid May but lifts may not run for full weeks until end of June and close in September.

The Ingham site is wonderful thank you.

Do people fly into innsbruck?

Maybe not quite the area you're looking at, but I've stayed at St Wolfgang and Zell Am See in the summer. Boat trips, cable cars where all open, and it was beautiful walking up in the mountains. I can't imagine it'd be any different somewhere else. By the way Zell Am See is a larger resort, but has lots of character, the lake which you can cross, had a brass band performing outside in th the eenings on the edge of the result. It might of changed, but I'd recommend it.

LIZS · 30/03/2024 10:13

Seefeld is pretty, or St Anton/Lech area is more challenging hikes with an outdoor pool in the woods. Both easily accessible by rail from Innsbruck or Zurich.

SunshinDay · 30/03/2024 10:38

@LIZS we are definitely not hikers

OP posts:
LIZS · 30/03/2024 10:42

Or mountain biking

Justinthebath · 30/03/2024 19:14

Carefull you will turn into hikers - we did in Austria - it's so easy with lifts up 😀 fly to Innsbruck with Jet2 train to Mayrhofen or St Anton - or sheduled bus to Solden - another wonderfull valley with lots to do 😀 - no I'm not a travel agent - just an enthusiast - alternate to Tyrol is Switzerland but that needs £££ - we did for honeymoon 😍

Chocolateteabag · 30/03/2024 19:39

I've only been to Austria to ski but definitely want to go back in the summer

Around Elmau there are some beautiful mountain restaurants which I'd love to walk to on a summer day

Tbh I really love Austria and Austrians - just so friendly

We flew to Salzburg and then got the local bus to Zell am See this half term (skiing) it was 45€ for all 4 of us which for 1.5 hour transfer was amazing. Zell is also a lovely town to potter about in too

Went to Gries a few times years and years ago. It's utterly beautiful, the food was amazing, climbing mountains and eating at the hutte is the best, sitting on balcony watching lightning up the valley while it's perfectly warm. Heavenly.

In Kitzebuhl about 40 years ago we took a horse drawn carriage ride and the driver could do the most amazing realistic animal noises. I was entranced as a little kid though I doubt he still doing it.
