Flooring/Carpet Dilemmas (with a child)

Hello,

So my partner and I have recently been looking at laminate flooring/carpet for our new place.

Partner wants to go extremely dark with both (flooring in the hallways and living room and carpet in the two bedrooms and on the stairs) whereas I want to go somewhere in between. My parents have gloss tiles in their kitchen and every speck shows up! It's a never ending job to try and keep it clean. However DP thinks that a darker colour for both is more suitable for when out baby is a bit older.

In your experience which is better? Darker or lighter? Also any tips to save money on flooring/carpet? Some of the quotes we've received are extortionate!

Thanks in advance

We went darker in our hall last year and I’m currently saving to replace it with something lighter….it just makes it a dark hole, and there’s a fair amount of light that comes in…dark doesn’t mean it stays clean, you just don’t see as much of the muck-I don’t clean it any less often than I would if it was light coloured

Just my personal opinion ..
I would go mid to dark. A similar darkness on all floors but maybe a shade lighter in the bathroom and kitchen.

You don't want to see every hair and every toast crumb on the floor.
I would also have all floors either a warm tone or a cool tone and the walls lighter than the floors.
Choose good commercial quality underlay and floor covering in busy communal areas but save money in the bedrooms. Similar colours are available in a wide range of qualities and prices.

Dark colours show all the pale dirt.
Light colours show all the dark dirt.

Biggest thing for me is not going for a solid colour - so have som flecks of colour or a pattern or a texture variation.
What are you classing as light? Cream? No. Beige/greige/light grey yes. Or a bit darker.
I wouldn't go dark as is navy or maroon.

Medium and not a solid colour. And most definitely hard floors, not carpet. My preferences based on my experience anyway.

Plain dark carpet is a pain - it shows up every speck of light coloured fluff. Never have a cat with any white fur with a dark carpet 🙂. I bought a house with navy carpets, the seller was hoovering when I viewed, she was very apologetic. I realised later that it was so I didn’t realise it never looked clean.

I'd say we're swaying more towards grey. We're just trying to get the colour palette right as I'd want a mid-ish lighter colour and he wants a very dark - almost black colour but I'm worried every speck will show up. Looks like he'll have to compromise because from what I'm reading generally darker floors seem like a pain!

I don't like dark flooring, our carpets and tiles are quite light and they're easy enough to clean. I also HATE hard flooring in living spaces, so would only put carpet in living room, kids are grown now but can't say the mess they made was difficult to clean, spills were mostly food and most food was eaten in the kitchen/dining room.
