We're flying long haul tomorrow and my 12 year olds asthma has become bad after a cold. It's manageable but is leaving her coughing.

We took her to the hospital last night and she was discharged with an asthma plan of lots of ventolin regularly (a step down plan) but I'm worried about the flight.

Its 13 hours. And she's constantly coughing at night. It's not so bad in the day but it will be "night" on the plane. Shes fairly constant 😬. (it's driving me nuts...)

I will have her inhaler and a spacer so I can do the 10puffs if needed so I think that's okay.

But I'm worried about everyone around us. Her cough will drive them nuts if they're trying to sleep. And obviously people will worry about covid (although I can say to the flight attendant it's asthma induced)

Any advice??

Did you tell the hospital she was going on a long haul flight and did they think she was okay to do so?

Yes you will really annoy a lot of people around you. However, I don't think that's a reason to cancel your holiday. It's one flight, there can be crying babies, drunk people, turbulence.. other passengers will just have to cope. As long as it's ok for her health wise, just go. Maybe grab a pack of ear plugs to hand out to anyone moaning if you have time!

No but they listened to her chest and said she fine and gave her the plan. She sounds worse than she is it's just all irritated.

(yes that would have been a good idea)

It's going to be so irritating for everyone 😬😬 But not contagious. And it's SO long. I just can't believe it's happening now.

I would be irritated if it was me 😬

Oh its stopped now. Maybe it won't be so bad... Just before bed it was constant.

We're going to give her a travel sickness tablet she's had before and it's one that can help asthma and it's sleepy making so we will be trying.

Does a drowsy antihistamine help her sleep?

Ask the doctor for kodeine.

I'm not medical but I don't think she cna have codeine with asthma and it's tomorrow eve we fly 😬.

Shes been compeltely fine in the day it's just at night her coughing gets worse so a couple of hours ago. (typical with an asthma aggricated cough I think)

I did think maybe sleeping upright on the plane might help rather than lying down. She is actually quiet now. So maybe it won't be the whole flight?!

I'll give her cough sweets in the day as they're just honey really aren't they?

I'm so anxious now 😬.

Hello, I dont have any advice re the ashma but I will say as one very anxious ,
( covid affected ) mum that my fear is the same as yours with worrying what people will think or what if this or that to the point it has consumed me that please dont worry too much about others ..... everytime ive wasted so much energy on this I am proven time and time again it wasn't worth it... there will be others with coughs ,colds, snoring ..etc not to mention general plane noises that willl block it out .. my only suggestion would be if possible could you maybe book a seat at the back or close to the front so you are close to toilets on the evening fight to avoid having to walk up and down or bother people if she has a coughing episode and might want to have a wash to get up from her seat ?! I hope all will be fine for you..I agree with you about sitting up sleeping it probably will be better. have plenty of water to hand :)
