As a guest, what's the stingiest thing you've ever experienced?

Just that!
I'll start

I invited friends for dinner at mine. I made traditional dishes from where I'm from, sausage rougail, chicken cari and dessert.

A few days later they text me telling me to come to theirs for some food at dinner time.

I show up and bring a small jar of chilli peppers. One of the people who invited me goes "is that all you're going to eat?". I was confused and asked what they meant. They replied "It's everyone brings their own food."
I told them I thought they had invited me for dinner and they go "yes, we invited you to come to the house for dinner!".
They saw my face and said "don't worry, we can share some food with you!" before cutting a couple of raw carrots, aubergines, cherry tomatoes with some white sauce and putting them in the middle of the table.
They then served each other the meal they had made for themselves and digged in.

Note from MNHQ - we've had lots of nominations for this thread to be moved over to Mumsnet Classics and, as we're very generous hosts, we've done exactly this.

Be me, breastfeeding a month old baby, have ILs for two weeks.
Send them to shop with DHs credit card (they aren't feom UK and claim to be afraid of frauds so don't use theirs). They bough three fishes and proceeded to convince me I as a woman don't need a whole fish.
I am tall, slim (so obviously don't ned to watch food intake), brestfeeding and it was my money they used to buy damn fish.
Anyway, sleepdepraved I got mad and after that event I was always served whole fish/steak whatever.
Just give me normal portion ffs.
But yeah, people can be stingy with money that isn't even their lol

Another one - my uni boyfriend. We went on holiday together for the first time and he had a little notebook in which he recorded everything he’d spent that day, including adding up what we’d spent on each other - so say he bought us both a drink and I bought us both an ice cream, he’d work out how much I ‘owed’ him or vice versa. He didn’t actually want me to pay him the difference, he just wanted it recorded. Couldn’t be having with that long term.

Edited

There can't be two of them??! I went on one date with a guy like this at uni. Spotted him noting down the price of each drink in his notebook, legged it out of there!

pontipinemum · 28/03/2024 22:04

My Scandinavian friend came to stay for nearly 2 weeks when I was 16. My mam gave me money to pay for all his food for days out/ train tickets, even flights to Ireland to visit the rest of my family.

I went over the following year. He took me to their family cabin in the woods - miles from anywhere - we stopped at an offie before going and got drink. He didn't bring any food for me (or tell me to buy some) and grudgingly shared about 2 hotdogs with me over the 2 day trip. His mam fed me though when we spent the rest of the trip at his house.

Not sure if its stinger or they were CF. Invited some friends to stay in a holiday home we rented for a few months. Ferried them to & from the airport (hour drive each way) made them breakfast & dinner every night, took them on day trips.....they didn't even bring a gift. No offer of paying petrol money. They made sure they split every meal or drink out 50/50. On the last day they'd been shopping and bought their son a small toy car as a gift but didnt even get a small gift for our son. Zo rude. To make it worse I got up in the morning, and friends wife was having a lie in until 10.30. Meanwhile I made her son breakfast, he was crying for his mum, she was ignoring him. Her DH was working on his laptop. Never again

A hugely generous friend hosted a birthday party for her partner. She'd ordered in some trays of sandwiches/wraps as nibbles with crisps etc but it was just that, a nibble. The usual loads of all types of premium alcohol supplied and an amazing cake.

A known tight arse mutual friend texted ahead, she'd be a bit late so could host plate up 2 lots of sandwiches for tight friend and her husband's dinner? Answer was no, it's just a nibble but there will be cake.

Tight arse arrives with 4 mini wine bottles. Drinks 1, then downs a load of hosts decent wine. On leaving she took the remaining 3 mini bottles with her.

Absolute minge bag.

Went to visit my friend from university with my little brother. Lunchtime came as we stood parked outside her Surrey mansion, she suggested we took ourselves to the cafe round the corner and get lunch while she goes home and eat hers. We were in fits of giggles in the cafe. I was so embarrassed in front of my brother.

Frenchmartini02 · 28/03/2024 22:07

Also SIL is the tightest person I've ever met. I once left a tip at a restaurant we'd been too and as we were leaving, she took the tip money I'd left. It was bizarre.
She had a very small wedding with immediate family only, 8 of us went. All 4 of us girls were there with her getting ready, I took a nice bottle of champagne for us all to have while we got ready and she took it and I never sae it again.

Went to inlaws overnight (at their insistence) while heavily pregnant. At dinner, they served me a half portion (apparently pregnant women have no space in their body for more food) and breakfast in the morning was half a bagel each. SILS pre-teen kids came round and were given a full, cooked breakfast (boys have big appetites, apparently). I had to stop on the way home for food. I've never stayed again.

This is so reminiscent of my ex MIL.

We'd travel for 2 hours to see her, and on arrival she'd rush round getting ex hubby food and a cuppa and not once ask me... I was young and shy so used to go for hours with nothing to eat or drink.

Ex hubby was a useless feck and would tell me to 'help myself'
The thought of walking into someone else's kitchen and going through their cupboards is not something I would do.

Did I mention he's my 'ex!'

WaitingforCheese · 28/03/2024 22:12

We had friends we took turns paying for dinner/lunch with. We took them somewhere really nice and quite expensive. In return they suggested we went to a pub in literally the middle of nowhere and impossible to find. Turns out it’s because it was dirt cheap and crap. We went to theirs for coffee afterwards. They asked if next time we were taking them to the nice place again. They have significantly more money than us. We didn’t go out again.

Got charged a fortune for Christmas dinner at relatives house and they served up a tiny meal. Turns out they were saving as much as possible to serve to others the next day, after we’d paid for it. These are people who are always accusing us of being ‘cheap’ but usually as we won’t pay for things for them.

I'd only provide lunch if I invited someone for lunch. Not if they said they'd drop in to do a present swap at lunch time.

Seriously? You think its ok to offer family one tiny mince pie each??
i offer more to my cleaner 🤦‍♀️

I have to say OP, one chicken weighing between 1kg and 1.5kg (bones included) between EIGHT TO TEN people sounds pretty stingy to me!!

It’s ok, it’s a Mumsnet chicken.

Not at a friends or relatives house but a guest house in Ireland, my brother got married in Dublin so me my 2 sisters mom and brother booked a B&B for the weekend just outside of there, we left Birmingham airport at 6am and by the time we got to the B&B it was mid afternoon, the landlady said as we came in to book in if you want a cup of tea or coffee theres a cafe up the road, now we are Brummies so the kettle goes on before your fully through the door we looked at each other in utter astonishment so much for Irish hospitality

Dats da fuckin dubs for ya

(joke joke for any Dubliners in the vicinity 😇)

People are so weird honestly

We went to a friends house with a bottle of wine, we all drank the wine and then when they said what else would I like to drink, I said more wine please and they replied they had none and I could have squash or milk. Like I’m an 8 year old.

😂

Slightly similar to the OP.

I enjoy cooking and we had hosted an old friend of DH's and his new wife that have recently moved near to us. 3 course meal - put a lot of effort in. DH bought in loads of nice expensive wine.

They arrived empty handed which should have been a sign....

They invited us to theirs about 6 weeks later and handed us a takeaway menu to order from and asked what drinks we would like as they would stop off at Asda on the way back from the takeaway as they had nothing in.

Okay - a bit odd but not everyone likes to cook.....but a bit annoying to have to wait for something to drink...

End of the night and we were asked to hand over £100 to pay for the food and drink...(no way did it cost that much).

No we didn't pay. We laughed and I gave them a rundown on how much hosting them had cost - significantly more than £100 btw.

Then walked out and blocked them.

Good!! Cheeky bastards

In our culture its actually shameful to be stingy. If we have a bbq, each neighbour gets a plate ran over to their house. Even a quick visit, we'll feed people. My friend (not from my culture) used to sleepiver at my house alot and one morning I had an early shift so assumed she'd leave when she woke. I came home to her sitting on the sofa surrounded by plates of food that my parents had made. I used to have to ASK for a glass of tap water at her house, her and her siblings also used to physically fight over who drank a sip of whose coke in the fridge or who had a packet of their crisps. I never once ate at her house, she'd excuse herself if we were in her room to eat and come back up after...

It’s shameful in British culture aswell it’s just that some people have no shame 😂😂

OpalsOriginals · 28/03/2024 22:33

Had some friends over after moving back to my home town. I hadn’t seen them for a few years so invited them all and their new (to me) partners. I’d moved a little way out from town and the first thing they said when they arrived was that they expected me to help pay for taxis (I laughed it off). Between the 6 of them they brought a four pack of beers. I fed them and they drank plenty, but not their beer, which became apparent because on leaving they asked me to get them for them to take home.

I have a family member that often contributes (after being explicitly —told— asked) a litre bottle of supermarket pop and single can of branded pop (from a multipack) labelled with their name.

Invited to IL's for Boxing Day 'buffet' 6 adults 2 primary children and my baby who I was breast feeding at the time. MIL served 4 roast potatoes.... nothing else not even a drink. There were no places open to get food from it was a miserable night.
They had been to mine for Christmas dinner full works 3 courses IL's didn't even offer to bring anything no dessert, drink nothing.

I've never eaten at their house since, even when we visit I've never been offered a cup of tea.
It's just bad manners, never has anybody visited my home that didn't get offered at least a drink. I just don't understand the lack of manners from some people.

🤬😳

listsandbudgets · 28/03/2024 22:35

Forst if all OP... please invite me to dinner that meal sounds amazing

secondly how mean of them.. I hope you don't think this is standard British hospitality because its not. I had guests tonight and we had a 3 clirse meal woth enty if nice drinks. If i have more good food than my giests can eat I happy. they sound absolutely dreadful.. what a horrible way to treat you

listsandbudgets · 28/03/2024 22:36

That should have been 'a 3 course meal woth plenty of nice drinks '

tennesseewhiskey1 · 28/03/2024 22:36

Invited me over then ate in front of me without offering anything. I got a glass of water.

19lottie82 · 28/03/2024 22:37

For an occasion, I took a group of 3 friends and their husbands out with myself and my partner and paid £500 for the bill, which included 3 courses, wine and cocktails.

The following month I met two of them for lunch at a cafe where we all had a coffee and a small bite to eat. I think the bill worked out about £20 in total. They both asked me for my share. I thought that was a bit mean.
neither of them were skint, quite the opposite in fact.

I suspect you had some nice wine there @listsandbudgets 🙌🏻🤣

Anonymous2025 · 28/03/2024 22:43

I come from a culture where we argue as to who pays the bill in a restaurant , if we get visits we give them tea cake , a full meal dessert and a takeaway leftover 😂😂
I can’t even go empty handed to someone’s house even if just for a coffee without feeling guilty .
