Tesco, Sainsburys, ASDA, Lidl AND Aldi are all cutting down the price of some veg to 15p this weekend...

If they can do it for a weekend, why can't they do it more often?? Or even all year round?

This would really help people eat better.

Erm. Why do you think? It's not too tricky!

Desecratedcoconut · 28/03/2024 10:38

Presumably it's a loss leader. They expect you go in for your 15p carrots and come out with a £6 tub of Ben and Jerry's.

And .... in answer to your actual question, they tend to do it at Christmas/ Easter because people are typically spending more than on their usual weekly shop and so the promotion nets more profit than it would do otherwise.

Why can't a shop sell items for less than they've paid for them all of the time.... let me think.... 🤔

they do it at Christmas and Easter as they know most people won’t just be buying the veg, its not viable year round.

Well that’s a good point, but of course even if they did reduce the price of fruit and veg all of the time, it wouldn’t ever be the supermarket losing money, it’d be the farmers supplying them that they would beat down on price.

MeinKraft · 28/03/2024 10:45

If you store it properly, you can make that veg last for ages tbf.

LittleGreenDragons · 28/03/2024 10:45

Wonder if they will hide all the carrots amongst the really expensive Easter eggs that are still left on the shelf? Now that would be good marketing 😂

Loopsielou · 28/03/2024 10:46

Because they like to fuck over their farmer suppliers

TheTecknician · 28/03/2024 15:35

Coz they won't be selling any on Easter Sunday so to help shift as much as possible before then.

KirstenBlest · 28/03/2024 15:39

It's to get people into the store. They'll make up the difference elsewhere.

But that sort of veg isn't expensive at any time really.

A bag of carrots is normally 50 p. You can get cabbage, broccoli, potatoes, onions and whatever is on the Super 6 end display for similar amounts. any day of the year.

A few pence difference in the cost of basic veg is not going to suddenly make people who normally eat badly for whatever reason start eating loads of veg.

KirstenBlest · 28/03/2024 17:26

@Bjorkdidit "people who normally eat badly for whatever reason" often say that fresh food is too expensive but if you are careful you can eat healthily without spending much.

Many of the people buying the cheap veg will be buying meat and other things to eat with the veg.
