Does anyone else feel like everything has gone a bit to shit and that there's no way out of the decline?

I've noticed that I take it for granted now that things won't work, and that I need to make allowance that whoever I deal with whether personally or professionally is struggling practically, financially or otherwise. Like, my expectations are lowered, because nothing is as good as it was and life is a bit shit for everyone. It just feels so ... hopeless.

Does anyone else feel the same?

Completely agree OP.
Nothing works.
I don't expect any level of service when I ring any sort of helpline and it's rarely any good. Everything just keeps rocketing in price.
The UK seems a grim and dismal place right now.

HappiestSleeping · 28/03/2024 03:23

Same here.

Seaitoverthere · 28/03/2024 03:28

This is a conversation that crops up in my circle of friends with alarming regularity and I totally agree.

Meadowfinch · 28/03/2024 03:29

No, quite the opposite actually.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in Sept21. Since then the local NHS has been fantastic. I was seen within three days, surgery in 40 days. Chemo & radiotherapy all kept to schedule and covid was not allowed to get in the way. I'm back to full power now, all going well.

Last week I had an op to remove an ovary where I'd managed to grow a (benign) cyst. I saw the gynae in December, op before Easter. Now all the bloating and discomfort have gone. I feel fab. Such a relief.

So from me at least, the NHS gets a round of applause. It's spring, I have four days off. I feel truly healthy for the first time in ages. I can't help smiling. 🤗

Coldia · 28/03/2024 03:36

God speed to you @Meadowfinch , long may it continue!

Me, I've got a gynae appointment in two weeks, which I was perturbed to work out is just three weeks shy of a year after when I was referred by my GP. Hopefully it's not cancer. At least, I'm not dead yet. But I don't know what's going on because I can't see inside myself.

Good luck OP. I hope it's something very minor and easily fixable.

Honestly, once babymaking is over, hormones are a flippin' nuisance 🙄

“Before social media we used to consume a wide variety of news content from a variety of perspectives & form our own opinion, so we were naturally more moderate.”

This simply isn’t true. I’ve been around a long time, back when you had to wrap foil around the television antenna to get good reception. Anyway, my experience has been that people pay attention to news that reinforces their views of the world. BBC yes, but never ITV or the Guardian. And children tended to take on their parents views, without bothering to form their own opinions.

And sometimes you had to stand next to the telly and hold the damn thing while your parents watched the news!

When society still promoted family values

More people had children at their disposal to hold the TV antenna

We had to earn our keep

If TVs still had antennas today, parents wouldn't force their kids to hold them

Because it might upset them & cause lifelong trauma

I know it sucks, right? These snowflakes seem determined to end the generational trauma that they suffered. Everyone knows family values involves making your kids as fucked up as you, it's a great British tradition. That's why we partake in such epic self harm by continually voting against our best interests.

& thank God for that

Youth today aren't known suffering from mental health issues anymore, thanks to modern day progressive styles of parenting

It's great to see our youth coping so well with the pressures they face today

This conversation is wild. Are we really arguing about hypothetical non-situations involving children suffering trauma from holding a television part in mid-air which nobody is actually doing anyway?

Fulshaw · 28/03/2024 06:40

So bloody negative. Why don’t you try changing your mindset to something more positive and you might feel better?

hattie43 · 28/03/2024 06:51

Nope not at all .
Yes some things are annoying like potholes but they aren't life threatening. My local GP surgery has been fantastic , food is on the table , the lights are on , friends are amazing , travel has been wonderful.

Life is good

Potholes are dangerous..especially to cyclists , a cohort we should be encouraging, plus they can damage cars.

Oh do give over! If you really think that every young person is suffering from generational trauma then all I can say is that you have been brainwashed.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the next generations turn out - and whether or not they will blame their parents for everything that is wrong in their lives.

When I read the OP's post the first thing that came to mind as it goes was potholes. Our High Street had got so bad it was finally closed for a week to be totally resurfaced. Except they've done a shit job, you can feel the surface vibrations through the steering wheel and manhole covers are too sunken in to the surface. It won't last 5 minutes.

I think pot holes are a world wide issue.

@JordanPeterson your username tells me everything I need to know about your regressive misogynistic views.

Droppit · 28/03/2024 07:13

I agree but I still have a glimpse of optimism that things will improve.
I just feel grateful to have lived through the 90s and early 2000s - things seemed good back then (although I fully accept this might be rose-tinted)
