Hamster. Not eating and drinking

PoorHammyHamster · 27/03/2024 14:46

Hamster is 2 years 4 months so is definitely getting on a bit.
Its not been eating for about a week. I put fresh food in again a few times and not taken any, same with water bottle. None has been drank.
Its been smelling funny / urine like for a while, despite regular cleaning.
No food or bedding has been changed as in the brands.

I cant check properly as it's vicious and has never been handled as such, despite numerous attempts ( previous hamsters have trained well)

Any tips? I don't want it suffering. Its hardly even moving.
Previous hamsters have always just passed away fairly quickly. Im assuming its probably going to pass away but don't want it suffering or pro longing it.
Will a vet PITS? Never been to a vet before so unsure of protocol

Yes a vet will see a hamster, sounds like he is pretty ill, poor little thing.

It sounds like the end is nigh. A vet will euthanise , if necessary. I'd take him in asap, if it's already been a week without food/water, he will be suffering.

Usually when they start smelling of urine it's wet tail which is usually fatal. I'd take him to the vet. He's an advanced age for a hamster. They'll probably put him out of his misery x

You should take it to the vets, and if there is nothing the vet can do to make it better, they will put it to sleep.

I'm so sorry . . . I had something similar with my hamster but he was a lot younger

I took him to the vet and she explained that hamsters will only eat if they can smell the food so if anything interferes with their sense of smell they will stop eating

Unfortunately my little guy had a brain tumour (not saying this is what your hamster has)

My vet was extremely helpful . . . .I think you definitely need to take your little pet to the vet ASAP

It sounds like your hamster might have wet tail or a similar urinary infection. Can you check its backside? Two and a half years is a good age for your wee ham, best to take it to a vet and see what's what.

Thank you. Will take him to vet tomorrow they are close now and only just got home
