Hello

I'm coming out of a really difficult and intense few months and am desperate to disappear into a genuinely funny book now that I actually have time to read for enjoyment again. Any recommendations, please?

OP posts:

P G Wodehouse
Terry Pratchett

terry pratchett

I’ve always been a fan of Bill Bryson’s Notes from a Small Island.

Pixit · 27/03/2024 12:43

All of the above and also Tibor Fischer - Collector Collector or Under The Frog.

NannyGythaOgg · 27/03/2024 12:48

Jodi Taylor: Chronicles of St Marys
I totally lost my reading mojo but started this series on recommendation and have now read the whole series, plus The Time Police series and everything else she has written

Strong female character by Fern Brady. She is an autistic stand-up comedian - I wouldn’t say it is uplifting but it is funny, I listened to the audiobook which was great.

tapdancingmum · 27/03/2024 12:54

I would second any Bill Bryson book. I tried reading one in the quiet section of the train and ended up with a stitch as I tried to keep the laughter in.

I'm listening to the Tuesday Murder Club at the moment on Spotify and there are some nice laugh out loud moments which I think is helped by Lesley Manville reading it.

useitorlose · 27/03/2024 12:55

My sister the serial killer - funnier than the title suggests!

Abouttimeforanamechange · 27/03/2024 12:56

Also recommend Jodi Taylor.

Some of Georgette Heyer's Regency romances are very funny, or at least light hearted. You know that nothing very bad will happen to any character you are meant to care about.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 27/03/2024 13:06

Another vote for Jodi Taylor's Chronicles if St Mary's

TheHorneSection · 27/03/2024 13:12

If you are up for funny and trashy there’s a great little series of books about Riley Thorn, a psychic, on Kindle by Lucy Score. I’ve reread them a couple of times now when I just need something light and happy to read.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 27/03/2024 13:16

Definitely Bill Bryson and PG Wodehouse but the last thing that had me literally crying with laughter, proper tears rolling down my cheeks laughter, was Cabin Pressure on Radio 4.

SpringLight · 27/03/2024 13:17

As already suggested, Three Men in a Boat, Wodehouse, Bill Bryson and Terry Pratchett.

Three Men in a Boat in particular is really, properly funny. The bit with the opening of a pineapple tin is generally seen as the funniest moment, but for me it's actually the beginning part when Montmorency the dog is "helping" with packing for the trip. I cried laughing at that.

Also, the first Adrian Mole book (they're all funny but I think the first is the best), Diary of a Provincial Lady and The Diary of a Nobody.

thecanadianloon · 27/03/2024 13:49

"The hundred year old man who climbed out of the window and disappeared." Crazy title, crazy but brilliant laugh out loud feel good book!

I always come onto these threads to recommend The Chronicles of St Marys 😁it's hands down the best series I have ever read

You won't regret it, I promise!

Darklane · 27/03/2024 14:38

Definitely Three Men in a Boat, my most favourite book ever.

Then Bill Bryson, especially Notes from a Small Island.
Any of the Answers to Exam Questions books, find them on Amazon for Kindle, you really couldn’t make them up.

me too! montomercy is probably the best character. and the incident where two men accidentally end up in the same bed and think there is a stranger in each of their beds. 😂

I don't know why it hasn't been made into a film

pinkerseal · 27/03/2024 15:10

The tent, the bucket and me
Miss Pettigrew lives for a day

StellaOlivetti · 27/03/2024 15:18

Seconded, @pinkerseal . The tent, the bucket and me was confiscated from me once as I was laughing so much I was keeping other people awake (shared family hotel room). It honestly is that funny.
And I also agree about Cabin Pressure, if you haven’t already listened to that OP.

Pantah630 · 27/03/2024 15:20

Tom Sharpe is a very funny author.

Dottiethekangaroo · 27/03/2024 15:31

P G Wodehouse Damsel in Distress

SittingontheSidelines · 27/03/2024 15:58

The darling buds of may H E Bates and the four other books in the series. feel good and funny, will make you smile. way way better than either of the TV adaptations.

SpringLight · 27/03/2024 16:18

@therealcookiemonster It really is genius.
