Is it weird if I ask can our kids play together?

Hello ladies. So we moved from the city to a rural town around 6 months or so ago. We don’t really know anyone other than our elderly neighbors. My son has been nagging to play with friends but most of his school friends are away on holidays etc. For a few months I have been buying our eggs and honey from a local farm up the road. I usually text the lady and let her know I’m coming, but I don’t know her in any other capacity other than I buy eggs from her. I know she has two kids around the same age as DS. Would it be really weird and creepy of me to text her and ask if they wanted to play together for a bit over the holidays? I struggle with social anxiety and I’m not entirely sure this is appropriate, but I know DS would love some new playmates.

Why not ask if her kids would like to come to yours, or meet at the park?
It would be creepy if you were some random bloke, but I assume you're not😉
Just go for it

I think there’s no harm in sending a casual text, something like ‘we are heading to x today, if you and the kids are free, you’re welcome to join us’. Do you both get on well? I think it’s courageous to put yourself out there for you kid and I definitely don’t see it as creepy.

I'd pop her a text to say something like "hello! As you know we're new to the area. LIttle Johnnie is missing his old friends. I thiught I'd ask on the offchance whether your kids might be up for a playdate? They're welcome to come to ours, or we could meet at X ? No worries at all if it's not convenient, but if there's a day which might suit you over the next few weeks just let me know".

Job done! If she's not keen she can just say they're busy.

Thank you, we haven’t spoken a great deal. She was very genial when I first met her and allowed my son to meet her chickens and whatnot. I don’t see her that often as she uses an honesty box, but she’s friendly and polite through texts and when I do see her. I guess I will take the plunge and see what she says, thank you for assuring me.

Definitely go for it.
I did similar years ago.

We are still friends!

anareen · 31/03/2024 02:34

I personally wouldn't. Maybe if you have met her children before but if not..... idk seems strange to me.

CrappyBarbara · 31/03/2024 02:35

How old are the children?

coxesorangepippin · 31/03/2024 03:35

Are the kids all at the same school?

JMSA · 31/03/2024 04:19

Lovely idea. Definitely worth a shot anyway.
Good luck with it! Smile

seasaltbarbie · 31/03/2024 08:15

I think it would be lovely of someone asked me if their kids could play with my kids. Go for it. Definitely not weird.

This is perfect. Text this.

I home educate my daughter and doing something like this prior to home ed, I wouldn’t have been confident enough. Now I’ve had to get ourselves out there in order to meet new people so I absolutely would!

I don't have kids so don't know the etiquette but just wanted to add this is a lovely text and in don't think anyone would take it amiss. She can always say no but might be delighted to be asked.

🙄 There's always one

anareen · 31/03/2024 18:11

@NaiceUser

She asked for opinions so I gave mine.......? I don't see what the problem is.

It is our job to protect our children. If I was in the company of someone for only a couple months for what, probably 10 minutes at most for a business transaction and then they asked if our children can play..... no. Maybe if that was a topic of discussion and we connected over shared stories of our children...... POSSIBLY. I do wonder how much the children have been discussed between these two as OP mentioned she knows egg lady has two children and knows the relative ages.

I also wonder if OP has mentioned to the egg lady that her and her children are new to the area in these interactions. If she has and the egg lady has not offered to get the children together then I absolutely would not be asking.

Totally. I have an only child in small village and everyone knows to come and ask him as he's always up for a bike ride, football, etc with any visitors grandkids, etc
If I find new people in village with kids I always try and get some kind of play organised , usually just a kick about somewhere
