So almost 2 years ago, my car was hit by a neighbour. They admitted liability and everything seemed to be relatively straightforward. Work was carried out on my car and because liability had been received from the other party I didn't need to pay for this.
Almost a year later I got my renewal documents through and the cost to insure my car was over double what it normally was. When I phoned to enquire, I was told that the third parties insurance still hadn't paid out and I was being charged accordingly since the claim was technically still open. I challenged this and was told that while they would uphold my complaint and my insurer hadn't done enough to chase the third party insurer, they couldn't adjust the renewal price until things were resolved. They told me that if I stayed with them they would refund me the additional payment I was making. I had no option because other insurers were also quoting me as if I had an open at fault claim so I couldn't go elsewhere.
Eventually about 4 months later, the third party insurer did make payment after being threatened with legal action and I was told things would be closed and I'd get confirmation of this via email. Nothing came through so when I rang I was informed that the third party had disputed the cost of labour and had made payment which was £10 short. So my insurer wouldn't close things off as they were still owed £10. We're now almost 2 years later, I'm still paying over double each month what I should be and my insurer is refusing to give me any further information as they've passed my case on to a solicitor. But it's been months and I haven't heard a thing from the solicitor.
What can I do here? With childcare costs having just returned to work after a baby I don't have this extra money to spend every month, we're already on a tight budget without this on top of it. Has anyone been through similar and what would you advise? Have I any way of guaranteeing that I'll get money back from the overpayments I've been making since I was never at fault?
