How would/do you feel about your cat going into other peoples houses?

How would you feel if you knew your cat was visiting and spending time at other peoples houses? Would you mind?

I have a neighbour with two cats that are always trying to get into people’s houses. Not surprising given that she never seems to let them into her own house. It really annoys me especially in summer when the windows are open. The first time it happened I was asleep, the cat got in through my bedroom window and I nearly had a heart attack waking up to something walking around on my bed! Personally I think we should have a ban on outdoor cats like Australia. They get into houses, poop on gardens and kill birds.

Beamur · 27/03/2024 12:52

My old cat sometimes used to follow me to visit local friends (mine) and if we were out too long he would visit their homes to see if we were there.
He was a very friendly boy but loyal to home.
One of my current cats visited and stayed. His owners have graciously signed him over to me.
There's another cat lurking in my garden. Seems hungry but I am sure he is owned. Am not trying to befriend him as my other cats aren't keen, but he's hoovering up any leftovers (I feed my outdoor cat outside)

FiveGoMadInDorset · 27/03/2024 12:54

My next door neighbours cat moved in with us three years ago, they don’t mind as she really doesn’t like them, I feed her they pay vet bills if needed, she glares at them when they come round

Mine was put under house arrest after spending too long in other people's houses.

He goes in, eats all the cat food, duffs up their own cat who usually shits themselves. And then comes home with fleas.

He also targets little old ladies who are too soft to tell him to fuck off but not so soft that they don't come to my house moaning about him.

So he has had six months of being a house cat. He isn't impressed.

lifeonapersiancarpet · 27/03/2024 13:23

Name changed as I've told others this story.

My cat disappeared and turned up a few doors down the road. The house owner was embarrassed but reluctant to return him, as she said her recently dead husband had sent him to her. And that they ate fish and chips from the chippie in the evening.

She was very sweet, and lonely, so we sort of shared him, but really he moved in with her. He had a cushion placed for him in the window, and she used to move it to keep up with the sun!

I wouldn’t like it, and would be pissed off if someone was encouraging it. I want my cat to be either outdoors getting fresh air and exercise, or at home safe. Sleeping in someone else’s house is the worst of all worlds.

Cats invite themselves though! Often help themselves to someone else's dinner too. In my case it was the food I put out each evening for the hedgehogs.
One day he ventured into the house when a door was open in the summer and now he's a 'not my cat'!
He was covered in fleas and scabs so I don't think he was being looked after properly. He's in great condition now.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 27/03/2024 15:12

It doesn't bother me in the slightest as long as the people don't mind. My cat was genuinely best friends with our neighbour's cat (I've never seen this with cats before). They used to go round to call for each other and hang out. My cat went in their house a lot, but we have a microchip cat flap, so their cat couldn't come in. Sadly their cat died recently but they have a new one. I hope she'll make friends with ours!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 27/03/2024 15:13

Meant to add - we are good friends with our neighbours and they don't mind him coming round!

Does anybody remember that thread about the woman who's cat got trapped in the neighbour's house and the neighbours had gone away on holiday?

The woman had tried to tempt it out / feed it by shoving bits of ham through a vent.

All kinds of damage plus rotting-ham-in-vents unfolded and the neighbour returned to a real shit show and threatened legal action or something.

It was an excellent thread.

Yes I remember this! It’s one of my favourite threads I’ve ever read 😆

It would depend for me which house as to if I'd worry or not.

Luckily my current lad is pretty timid. Our old cat would waltz in anywhere but generally the neighbours were pretty chilled out it and knew just to pick him up and put him out as he was very laid back and lazy and the neighbours were all nice people.

Our neighbours' young cat (only about 8 months old) comes into ours any chance he gets to see our 3 year old boy cat and play with his toys.

We never feed him or let him stay long but goodness knows what it'll be like in summer when windows and doors are open.

I do send her a photo when he's in with us and she knows we wouldn't feed him or ever try to keep him.

She also has texted me before when he's been out a little too long to ask if we've seen him etc.

Same with another cat who doesn't come in but likes to chill in our garden. As long as it's not upsetting our cat then we're happy to have feline visitors.

Topseyt123 · 27/03/2024 15:27

When I was a child my mother's cat used to visit many of the neighbours.

He once came home dragging a whole roast chicken. We never did discover where that had come from and it was never mentioned again. 🤣

PutASpellOnYou · 27/03/2024 15:37

I deliberately did not socialise my kittens when younger to avoid this issue, due to previous problems with neighbours and my cats.

Allofaflutter · 27/03/2024 15:39

The UEA in Norwich has a campus cat that even has its own merch. Sylvester the cat! That cat is a many thousand dinner Sid!

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 27/03/2024 15:45

Oh l know mine is an absolute whore and will go to anyone that will have him.
Doesn't bother me until he turns his nose up at the food l ofd?fer him!

IvorTheEngineDriver · 27/03/2024 15:46

If they are happy with him visiting, I'd be OK with it. When we moved out of London we left one cat behind who had made it abundantly clear that he preferred living in the office of the removals firm at the end of the road to living with us.

Well there were holes in the story than a sieve, surely no one believed it?

Our cat also has a friend! We don’t know who owns her but she regularly turns up in the garden and they sit together for a while, then they walk around and jump on the wall together and carry out their neighbourhood watch duties.

She comes into the house in the summer when the back door is open, but if the door is closed and we open it she backs off a bit until DCat goes out to be with her.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 26/03/2024 23:12

Mine too-she hates everyone and barely tolerates us so she is never going to go elsewhere 💀

I thought that too until I found out mine was considered the friendliest cat in the neighbourhood by all my neighbours

HouseofGods · 27/03/2024 18:09

I'm on the other side of this and the neighbour's bloody cat came in to our house multiple times last year during the summer. We are not cat people. We now have a dog again so hoping that should cut it down this year - dog is a terrier so I expect he'd give chase if he found a cat in his house.

One of my male cats comes home smelling of treachery and he gets investigated! He's been fat shamed by the vet so considering a special no feed collar!!

😂😂😂

IncompleteSenten · 29/03/2024 11:16

I wouldn't mind but I would check that my neighbour didn't mind my cat going in.
And if a neighbours cat was visiting me, I'd check with them that they were ok with that.

Neither likely in my case though because my cat hates everyone who isn't a member of her family, doesn't go outside of our garden and my nickname for her is asbocat which tells you all you need to know.

Except bizarrely some years back she met a stray tom and actually moved him in! She brought him home and he just lived here from then on until he passed. First and only time she's not kicked the absolute shit out of any cat that came into her garden.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 30/03/2024 18:58

Not my Cat. No food or treats given. I don't have any now and after some fusses, a mooch about the place and a quick rest on the bed off she went. I have absolutely no idea where the Cat lives though. I just see it occasionally near by. Although we was visited more frequently when I still had my Cat.

CrikeyMajikey · 30/03/2024 19:09

Nope. I often walk the dog and find my
cat watching me from someone else’s window.
