Why do l ache all over after a tooth extraction?

I feel like I’ve got flu. Every single part of me aches.

I had to have an emergency removal yesterday morning. It didn’t want to come out. I’m pretty calm about the dentist.

Now I feel I’ve been hit by a bus. All over.

You probably do just have a virus coming on and the tooth is a red herring

Durdledore · 26/03/2024 16:23

Yeah it’s either what @MaloneMeadow said, or it’s a reaction to the stress of the tooth that didn’t want to come out.

Either way, take it easy today.

Take is easy. There might be an infection that has spread more generally from the tooth. You may be in shock. I would advise being careful - I crashed a car three days after a tooth extraction and felt I had been woken from a slumber when I crashed. I was then mortified that I had been driving.

I don’t feel shocked. Or hot. I just ache.

It wasn’t an infection. I snapped the tooth supporting a bridge at the root and it cracked all the way up
into the root.

I remember feeling like that after I had my wisdom tooth out. Hopefully you can take it very easy for the next couple of days and it will pass.

Tinybigtanya · 26/03/2024 16:37

I would phone the dentist and ask.

Mmmm... Interestingly you build yourself up to a degree and almost expect the worse... I admit I slept for a while after... More of an autonamous reaction than anything but the following day I felt exhausted? At least it wasn't like the old days... With Nitrous oxygen and the feeling of being helplessly awake.... 😂 It'll pass...DG

It's your body reacting to the trauma of an injury and trying to heal...fairly common response (DH is a dentist). I felt like I got hit by a bus after double wisdom teeth removal. Oddly enough the pain wasn't even really at the surgical site, but just all over like having a flu.

SheepAndSword · 26/03/2024 22:00

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow I slept an awful lot after I had a wisdom tooth out - I honestly think your body goes into shock a bit and it takes a while to recover

Cleaningupthemess · 26/03/2024 22:07

I agree it’s a shock to the system. Even with anaesthetic you have the sensation of all that pushing, tugging, cracking sounds etc and I’m sure that results in an adrenaline rush and fall afterwards. I always feel absolutely done in after an extraction. Cold, shaky, exhausted and headachey.

Hope you feel much better soon.

NeedWineNow · 26/03/2024 22:24

I had the same when I had one a couple of years ago. I went home and was asleep on the sofa in minutes, woke up and felt achy all over. I think that, no matter how calm you feel, your body subconsciously tenses and the aching is a result of that. Take it easy and rest.

goingdownfighting · 26/03/2024 22:27

You might have an infection, or be coming down with something.

Very rarely, it can be sepsis. Make yourself familiar with the signs and call 111 if you run a fever - tooth infections can make you feel unwell.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/03/2024 10:34

Body aches gone.

Just look like I’ve been punched in the face now!😭

Sepsis! Make sure yourself that you are aware of the signs of this life threatening condition.... Because if it's left, it can lead to major organ failures, which I really don't need to highlight!
BE Aware...
