Hi!

I'm wanting to give my neighbour a gift for eid, the Internet suggests homemade foods such as cookies or cake, would that be okay? If so shall I bake a traditional recipe that's eaten at eid or do I make something that I'd make at any time and just pop it over?

Thanks for any suggestions/advice!

Oh so not to drip feed she's a newish neighbour but hasn't got her family local to us, so I'm happy to buy something for her also, a nice gift set/candle or something? I want something that just let's her know she's not on her own at eid.
Thank you 😊

I'd go for something you are used to making. Anything would be appreciated. It's a very kind gesture and I'm sure she'll be delighted!!

We just gave our postman a box of dates. He was delighted. Evening fast is broken with them, so they'd be appreciated.

Honestly she is absolutely lovely, she's the nicest neighbour I've ever had, so I hope she feels appreciated, especially at eid!

Thank you, I'll make some chocolate things then, I'm not very good at much baking wise but can do a mean brownie!

Oh lovely, ty!

This sounds ridiculous to say but I've never really had a Muslim friend before, my area isn't wildly diverse so I'm extremely uneducated about Ramadan, so I'll be learning much more about it.

And dates are bloody delicious 😂

I give my Muslim friends and neighbours fancy boxes of dates that I buy from a local continental grocer's - they look very festive!

It also removes the very slight doubt in the back of the mind of potentially using something that's not halal in homemade things, especially if the person to whom you're giving it is very observant.

As long as there's no gelatine, you're good x

Yes! I did think that but I'll make sure everything is definitely halal and I'll pick up a new brownie tin, just because I've made rocky road in mine and I'm not comfortable giving her something that's had gelatine in!

Thank you!

You sound lovely op. Even flowers and an Eid card will be much appreciated by her I'm sure..Eid falls around the 9th or 10th of April this year just in case you weren't sure.

TakeMe2Insanity · 26/03/2024 13:23

Cakes, biscuits etc all welcome just make sure no gelatine and no alcohol. Thats lovely.

Safa89 · 26/03/2024 22:11

This is a lovely gesture.
Dates are usually given for Ramadan. And for Eid, anything you or others have suggested are good. Chocolates,
flowers, homecooked bakery, cupcakes , box of biscuits! If you wanted to make the extra effort a candle/flowers is a beautiful gift for Eid and Im sure you’ll make her feel welcomed and content whatever you give, it’s definitely the thought that counts.

She’s lucky she has you as her neighbour and its really nice to read your post and know people like you exist .

I'd love that! I think we should all stick a few quid in and buy some land and have a mumsnet commune, I'll make you brownies hen 😂

That’s such a lovely gesture and I’m sure your neighbour will appreciate any gift you make or buy. I’ve made Muslim friends chocolate brownies and given flowers in the past. This year because I’ll be home over Eid I’m going to make my Muslim neighbour a sticky toffee pudding as it’s made with dates.

Safxxx · 27/03/2024 06:09

You are a lovely soul bless ya ❤️ I'm sure what ever you gift her will be appreciated. Honestly it's the thought that counts.

FunLurker · 27/03/2024 06:17

We brought our neighbour a plant (rhododendron) years ago and it's still going strong.

Lwrenn · 27/03/2024 11:27

She does love plants! That's a nice idea!
I really appreciate the suggestions, I am very hit and miss with gifts, I bought DP a segway the year all the kids wanted one and he was quite... surprised. After that ingenious moment I got my 30 year old partner a gift that all the tweens wanted I double check now, just incase my idea isn't the brilliant one I think it is! 😂

That's very thoughtful and kind of you.

I'm a Muslim.
A home baked good is deeply appreciated. There's no traditional Eid foods but cakes/ brownies/ cookies/ biscuits always go down well! And yes to the new tin, that's also very kind of you. But if you were unable to bake for whatever reason then a store bought cake/ biscuits is also very acceptable (just ensure it says suitable for vegetarian and it has no alcohol).
