Have you switched from glasses to contacts?

I'm debating switching to contacts but can't work out whether to or not. I wear glasses permanently, only taking them off to shower/sleep etc and having to put them straight back on as soon as I get up. I work in an office and 99% of my time is spent using screens

I've 29 and have worn glasses for about 15 years now, I have astigmatism so I'm not sure contacts are even an option? And I just feel like glasses are part of me if that makes sense, I feel like I would look very strange without themGrin

If you have made the switch did you get on with them easily?

Why don't you try them out? The good thing about contacts is that you don't need to switch permanently, you can use whichever you decide on each day. The trial at the optometrist is usually free then you just order 1-2 boxes at a time, so it isn't a big investment.

I started wearing them a few months ago after ten years wearing glasses. I had a lot of trouble putting them in at first, but now I can't believe how easy it has become.

I love contacts but I felt opposite to you - like I didn't feel "myself" with glasses and looked strange with them (even after ten years).

I've worn glasses since I was 10 and lenses since I was 16. And I've got an astigmatism, so yes, you'll be fine with lenses.

Speak to your optician and trial them. It doesn't have to be all or nothing - if you buy daily disposables, you could just buy 10 pairs a month.

Lanawashington · 26/03/2024 12:25

I don't know why I didn't even know you could have a trial of them. Will definitely give that a go and see how I get on

Most opticians will let you trial them, sometimes it takes you to try 2 or 3 brands to find the ones your eyes like best. I have astigmatism and the lenses are significantly more expensive than normal lenses, but I actually see more clearly with contact lenses than with glasses as they are weighted to sit in exactly the right place in your eye.

I can't wear them every day or for longer than about 6-8 hours a day though as I have dry eyes and find with looking at screens they feel gritty very quickly! Even the very high water content ones. So I buy a box of 30 pairs once or twice a year and that's enough for me as I'm only wearing occasionally

Mairzydotes · 26/03/2024 12:38

Yeah , I occasionally wear contacts . I have daily disposables and I have astigmatism, it would cos about £50 per month to wear a pair everyday, so it's not cheap. I find my glasses clearer for close up /reading.

I think you should give them a try.

Contacts can take some getting used to so be prepared to persevere, having said that modern soft lenses are comfortable and work well. Astigmatism is no problem. Give them a try!

I did and it’s a game changer ! The first couple of days I wasn’t sure as it felt a bit weird putting them in / taking them out but once I got to used to them I love them.

I wear mine all day, every day - I have to remind myself to take them out as I forget I’m wearing them as I find them really comfortable. It’s great for exercise etc

idontlikealdi · 26/03/2024 13:30

I hate wearing my glasses, I've worn contacts pretty much exclusively since 1997, remember the date because it was when I went to uni.

Now need to wear bloody reading glasses so thinking of trying the multiracial lenses.

NCForQuestions · 26/03/2024 13:33

I have not been 100% one or the other since I tried contacts.

I much prefer the ease of contacts for sunglasses or to wear on a fancy night out or if it's tipping with rain etc, but I find them very painful to wear when I have a migraine which is often.... So I am probably 70/30 glasses v contacts these days.

You don't have to go all put with contacts, it's perfectly fine to wear them as often as you want or once a year at a special event.

Give it a go!

MaloneMeadow · 26/03/2024 13:35

I could never go back to glasses. Been wearing lenses for 30 years with absolutely no issues. When my DD needed glasses at age 11 she decided to go straight to contacts and has also never looked back. On the rare occasion that I or she wears glasses we both agree that they give you an odd sort of ‘tunnel vision’ effect and they mess with your depth perception. Quality of vision with contacts is definitely far better

Jijithecat · 26/03/2024 13:37

I love my contact lenses. I have astigmatism and I think my lenses cost £27 a month for fortnightly disposables. I wear them for around 12 hours a day and do screen work all day with no issues.
I do have glasses but don't feel I see as well with them. I also used to get really annoyed when my glasses would steam up when I went indoors on a cold day.
Go for a trial and see if you like them.

anicecuppateaa · 26/03/2024 13:49

Yep I did and never looked back!

blaringcube · 26/03/2024 14:01

I still have glasses but I've been using monthly contact lenses for 9 years. I get them for £14 a month (3 month supply) and I love them!

I have astigmatism and wear monthly disposables. I'm extremely short-sighted and wore glasses since I was a child. I was 17 when I got lenses and I'm 56 now. I take them out when I get home and I don't mind popping to the shops in my specs but I'd never wear them out-out. I definitely got more confident when I switched to lenses.
