Any recs? I usually use those little floss picks. Dentist is encouraging me to use the little brushes but I find them fiddly.

I use one and I get on with it much better than with the brushes, floss, etc.

One very important thing is that I use previously boiled warm water, not out of a tap, to ensure that the water is reasonably sterile.
(I have a nice purple upstairs kettle for this purpose)

cooldarkroom · 26/03/2024 12:38

My dentist suggested I use one.
I had the oralB ones, but the water tube eventually leaked, & they are expensive, discolour & a total pain to clean.

I now buy cheap free standing portable ones from amazon, with no plug, no water & no tube. In Black. (So USB charge every few weeks)
Button to alter jet pulse. Can travel with it, simple to clean, cheap

I have the Phillips one and use it a lot , it’s brilliant .

I have this generic one from Amazon and I love it.

I don't think it's better than flossing with tape or interdental brushes. But my teeth are so crowded I found it very painful to floss using other methods. With the water flosser I actually use it every day so I've stuck with it.

My tips are to lean over the sink and look down as others have said. Watch some YouTube videos to show you the technique. Only start and stop it once it's already in your mouth otherwise you will get soaked!

Put a small capful of mouthwash in with the water and only use warm water, not cold or too hot as it can make your teeth sensitive.

Do it before you brush your teeth, otherwise you'll just be washing your toothpaste off.

Once a week I run some sterelising solution through it to keep it clean (spray it in the shower and it's excellent at removing limescale from the shower or cleaning the tiles at the same time 😂)

I'm a hygienist. In my opinion they are not as good as proper flossing or interdental brushes. But they're better than nothing and will have some effect.
If someone has very good oral hygiene already i wouldn't bother wasting money on one. However if someone can't/ won't use other things like floss or brushes then yes it will help. It's just not quite as effective.

pambeesleyhalpert · 26/03/2024 13:33

My husband is a periodontist and dosent recommended them

0sm0nthus · 26/03/2024 13:35

I'm very pleased with my cheap Amazon one I use warm salt water in it, I find it kinder to the gums than unsalted

madeinmanc · 26/03/2024 13:59

I can't for the life of me understand how people fit those little brushes between their teeth. There simply isn't room between my teeth for one to fit! In fact I have it force floss between and that's much finer.

Do you feel under pressure to follow a proper brush and floss routine every single day? Would he ever make a remark like: "That wasn't a full two minutes!"? 😬😀

I have 2 waterpik ones. They came as a bundle from Costco. The small battery powered on is not powerful enough and a dead loss. The bigger one that plugs into a shaver socket and has a water tank is absolutely great. I have had it for about 3 years and have used it twice a day since I have had it. It gets all sort of stuff out of my teeth, much better than interdental brushes. I have pockets in my gums so I run it along the gum line. I use it on a high setting. I recently asked the hygienist about it. She said she had recently changed her mind about the more powerful ones.
I have recently had a long holiday and using my waterflosser was one of the things I missed the most.

I have this one too! I love it. Bit fiddly to use at first but once you've used it a couple of times it's brilliant. Don't press the start button unless its pointing into your mouth!!

I often wondered about filling it with mouthwash rather than water, but would that not damage it?

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 26/03/2024 14:48

Forgot to say, I also use silicone interdental picks (I can't get on with the ones that have bristles!) So my routine is to use the picks, then water flosser and finish with brushing so that the toothpaste stays in my mouth. I use a sonic toothbrush, stops briefly every 30 seconds so you know to move onto the next quadrant of your mouth (so you're brushing for a full 2 minutes in total)

CrushingOnRubies · 26/03/2024 14:56

I have one. Probably don't use it as much as I should. But I have dyspraxia and I find normal flossing with tape / string really awkward

CrushingOnRubies · 26/03/2024 14:57

Should say I have the generic Amazon one

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 26/03/2024 14:59

I do and would recommend using it in the shower!

KnitFastDieWarm · 26/03/2024 15:42

I love mine, I have a joyous combo of autism/adhd and gum problems 😁so it’s a lifesaver. I can’t use regular floss as i hate the sensation (and forget to do it anyway). Water flosser lives by my sink and I just give my gum line a quick blast before brushing.

AuntieMarys · 26/03/2024 15:53

I'm on my 5th Philips one in 7 years.. they keep breaking but I get them replaced. My gums have never been better

They fit! You're going right in at the bottom of the teeth where there is a teeny gap. My teeth are really close together with no obvious space and I always said they won't fit
Hygienist showed me and I use the pink ones which I think are the smallest

Mindyourfunkybusiness · 26/03/2024 15:58

My dentist said not to get one, nothing beats regular flossing.

KirstenBlest · 26/03/2024 16:22

They fit! They don't.
Does anyone remember superfloss and can you still get it?

usernother · 26/03/2024 16:35

I've got one but my dentist said to use it in conjunction with the brushes.

@AuntieMarys That happened to mine too. So I switched to Waterpiks version as they have a 2 year warranty which I have called them on for 2 of mine over the years.

But I use mine twice everyday before brushing and like a pp said it really gets in the pockets which I also have.

Bristoluser · 26/03/2024 17:58

My dentist recommended flossing with brushes and water flosser.

RottingInBed · 26/03/2024 18:01

I'm 40 have a full set of teeth and no fillings. I've never flossed.

I did use a water flosser for a bit but got bored. My best tip is to use it in the shower to avoid mess.

RottingInBed · 26/03/2024 18:02

I also have good hair.
But VERY ugly legs Grin
