How do we get this tooth out (with photo)?

DD has always had problems with her teeth in that the adult teeth rarely push the baby teeth out so she’s frequently had two parallel teeth until the baby tooth eventually falls out. Until last night the baby tooth sat on an angle over the top of her adult tooth and wasn’t causing a problem. It’s now flipped upside down and is pressing into her gum and inside cheek. We’ve tried wiggling and twisting but it’s quite firmly stuck and now very sore. I also can’t get a good enough look to see by how much it’s attached.

The chances of getting a dentist appointment this side of Easter is slim so how do we get it out and can I cause damage to the gum if we pull before it’s ready?

If it's causing her pain or rubbing on the outside of her mouth, I'd phone for a dentist appointment - they rarely let a child suffer.

idontlikealdi · 26/03/2024 09:42

Don't force it out! Call the dentist and explain, they will surely see a child in pain?

Ladyprehensile · 26/03/2024 09:44

There’s probably an emergency dental clinic attached to your local big hospital. Make some enquiries and get an appointment.
For reference, my partner had to do this on a Sunday when he had severe tooth ache and needed an extraction.

Sorry, missed the dentist part out. We’re on the cancellation list but their NHS contract expires on Sunday so they are very busy this week and aren’t expecting many cancellations as people will have to pay from next week. The receptionist just said to keep twisting.

Call 111 and explain. They might be able to get you a slot with an emergency dentist.

Shelby1981 · 26/03/2024 13:54

I agree call 111, in our city there is one large dental practice they send you to for out of hours/emergencies (it's also where you go for more complicated eg wisdom tooth removals)

Emphasise that she's in pain and they should help.

Get some bonjela or other numbing gum cream and get her to just keep wiggling it. It's only held in by a little bit of gum now. Gentle toothbrushing might help. It might bleed a bit but don't worry

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/03/2024 18:02

NHS 111. They'll be able to refer to an emergency dentist.

DP was at one at 9.50pm on Friday night. It took 35 minutes for a callback and the appointment was 20 minutes later.

pizzaHeart · 26/03/2024 18:05

another vote for 111.

Could she bite into an apple? It sometimes helps to ease the tooth out.

BakedTattie · 26/03/2024 18:09

Could she try biting into a hard apple using those teeth?

ExcellentCat · 26/03/2024 18:10

When I was a little girl I couldn’t bear a tooth hanging by a thread. I sometimes used to take piece of cotton (just thin sewing thread) put it round under the tooth, cross the ends a pull & it would snip it quite painlessly.
or at least less painful than the door method and less scary.

troppibambini6 · 26/03/2024 18:14

Dd had exactly the same. The dentist told her to numb it with dental gel and keep wiggling it out. If she couldn't get it out after a week she would have to pull it.
Dd really didn't want that so did it herself.

TattiePants · 26/03/2024 21:40

We didn’t get a call back from the dentist and it’s still hanging on although it’s now lying flat against her tooth so not cutting into her gum at the minute. I have to call again in the morning to be added to tomorrow’s cancellation list and I’m going to beg them. If that doesn’t work then I’ll try 111.

She’s been wiggling / twisting it all day but it won’t budge! She won’t even eat something soft on that side of her mouth so no chance eating an apple.

Do 111 do dental emergencies? They weren’t able to help when I called them about a broken tooth a couple of years ago. They sent me to A&E who told me I needed an emergency dentist

I’d forgotten until this thread but I had dry socket on a weekend following a wisdom tooth removal and 111 booked me an emergency appointment with a dentist at our local hospital. No idea if they’d class DD’s annoying baby tooth an emergency.

When I've had to pull my sons teeth out, I've used a baby wipe over the tooth and it gives much better grip to pull

Craftyy · 26/03/2024 22:32

I've pulled my kids teeth out myself when they've been hanging out like that. If she won't eat something to dislodge it, time for you to get in there and pull it.

LostMySocks · 26/03/2024 22:45

DS has eaten 2 of his teeth with soft things: a doughnut that he had for pudding and spaghetti at school. I think he forgets to worry and just does a big chomp.

Copperoliverbear · 26/03/2024 23:09

Could you tie cotton around it and pull.

Mindovermatter247 · 26/03/2024 23:24

This happened to dd11 a few months back, it was hanging like this for 3 weeks, eventually she knocked it out whilst eating. She had tooth come through nearly fully underneath and that one just didn’t want to vacate. It wasn’t too painful, I think more annoying than anything.
