Did you regret DIYing things for your wedding?

Was it worth the time and expense and personal hassle?

e.g. invitations. We're getting married next May so it's still too early to do, but a lot of the lovely online ones need to be 'booked' (apparently). I have looked at Canva and Zazzle etc- but what if they're shit looking and I waste all of that money and time?

I DIY'd everything except dress, flowers and photographer and it was still brilliant. I did the invites myself - I'd use Canva now, it hadn't been invented back then! It was easy and I said exactly what I wanted! I was lucky that my venue was naturally gorgeous, and old Priory so didn't need decorating.

ooooohnoooooo · 25/03/2024 19:10

We got a ridiculous photo of us both and had Moonpig postcards made. We used those as invites. Everyone loved them. Cheap as chips. Not beautiful but very 'us'

In contrast my previous wedding, fancy invites and now we are divorced 😂😂😂

PlantDoctor · 25/03/2024 19:13

We DIY'd the table flowers including jam jars to hold them, invites and save the dates, little bottles of slow gin and names for place settings, and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting. It was fun to do it together, and DH is good with design so he did a lot of the graphics side. I personally think it all looked great and cohesive (sort of a rustic theme as we got married in a local winery/vineyard).

I looked at Canva and editing them seems very easy, but when it comes to printing, it seems a bit more complicated. I have a home printer but don't know if it will quite pull it off!

Regret DIYing my hair and makeup. 😂

All my bridesmaids booked hair and makeup at various places on the day yet I sat and did my own to save money and omg, you can tell the difference in the photos 😂

Caluse · 25/03/2024 19:15

We used Vistaprint for the invitations and it was great. We designed them ourselves and this was pre canva. I don't regret it at all, they were very us and so much cheaper.

DaveWatts · 25/03/2024 19:16

I used pigeon post for free email invites, didn't bother with paper ones. Cakes were made by relatives/friends, bridesmaids did hair & make-up, mum made my dress, I did all the flowers... Don't regret any of it.

Uncooperativefingers · 25/03/2024 19:16

We just used Vistaprint for our invites. Noone remembers the anyway, and we thought it was the best combo between minimal effort and minimal cost.

We DIY'd more stuff for the day, eg signage, decor and that was definitely worth it.

bluejeeeansbaby · 25/03/2024 19:21

I should probably be honest and say we're having 100 guests so even Vistaprint doesn't seem 'that' cheap.

DIYd most things including dress (cheapy ASOS number and I added applique to make it more me) and took it up. Flowers were just from Tesco in bottles we collected / sprayed. I make macrame so most of the decor I made like table runners and bunting etc. Killed myself making cross stitch table plans but only cos I left it too late really, and really loved the final product. DH made all the garden games. We did get the invites made, but from Etsy and they were worth it... Until COVID happened and we had to cancel the first time round (and the second 😂) so we just used a website to invite the third and final time as we couldn't afford to shell out on stamps again.

The only thing I regret was not starting things earlier... There were a lot of late nights in the run up to the big day but I'm a chronic delayer (ADHD).

Arielhills · 25/03/2024 19:21

I designed my invites on Canva, did have the intentions of printing myself and making an invite suite but in the end I ran out of time and printed through Canva itself for ease and bought a punch to make the corners look nicer
It was only £30-something for 70 plus envelopes and they got the job done, I really liked them.

I also DIY’d my centrepieces, seating plan, designed a welcome/order of the day sign on Canva and printed from printed.com, decorated the stand for them with false flowers, the name places doubled as favours, I burned everyone’s name into a wooden bottle opener (that was time consuming and not as easy as it looked but there were very few left behind so I think they went down well) and 150 welshcakes for cocktail hour! I don’t regret DIY-ing anything but I started things a good year in advance and pretty much everything was finished by 2 weeks before, would have regretted it if I had left it all til closer to the time for sure!

bluejeeeansbaby · 25/03/2024 19:22

I was getting much higher quotes on Canva!

I DIYd my flowers which turned out gorgeous. I use artificial flowers so did them in advance. Then I did my own invites. I didn't do anything that needed to be set up on the day and I was so glad as it free'd up my morning to just enjoy myself

teenboymom · 25/03/2024 19:26

We actually just made an invite on canva and screenshotted it and sent it via WhatsApp. A few of the older guests thought it was weird but I actually had gotten an invite like this before and it was so easy to RSVP because I just texted back yes! No having to email

Rosesanddaisies1 · 25/03/2024 19:27

If you’re going cheap I’d just use a wedding website or just send emails.

Merrow · 25/03/2024 19:29

We DIY'd invitations, table names, place names. All fine. I think the main thing that I'd recommend is skipping lots of things though. We had no centre pieces / table decorations / favours / chair covers.

QueSyrahSyrah · 25/03/2024 19:38

First wedding I did real DIY (printing invites onto paper, cutting and sticking things onto card) and yes I regretted it as they looked amateur.

Second wedding I used Vistaprint for invites and order of the day cards and was really happy with them.

QueSyrahSyrah · 25/03/2024 19:39

Ps.. if you sign up to Vistaprint's mailing list and you've got some time to wait they often send discount codes. I designed our stuff and then waited for the next 20% off code.

mitogoshi · 25/03/2024 19:45

I used Canva, save the dates emailed, invitation and menu printed at work.

mitogoshi · 25/03/2024 19:47

You can basically save Canva as a jpeg/png then I used publisher. Alternatively they can print

reallyneedwinerightnow · 25/03/2024 19:48

I only regret it because I got divorced Grin.

I enjoyed DIYing it - made the invites (wrote by hand in calligraphy), made the wedding dress, bridesmaids dresses, all table decorations, favours, cake etc.

If I were to get married again I would definitely DIY it.

NahNeedsGarlic · 25/03/2024 19:53

I’m still traumatised by being up at midnight on the eve of my wedding frantically gluing together menus and place setting cards, so it’s a definite no from me.

Given how much buffet food was left over we could have economised on that instead.

foodtoorder · 25/03/2024 19:54

Yes 100% regret it, still happily married but didn't enjoy the day at all. This was over 10years ago so lots of diy bits have moved on.
I do believe invites/stationary/favours and centre pieces and decorations, probably flowers even are manageable but anything else buy in/get help etc.

foodtoorder · 25/03/2024 19:55

Also def can't beat professional photographer and hair and make up.

bluejeeeansbaby · 25/03/2024 19:59

We're actually not bothering with center pieces, hotel provides a candelabra and that will do. No one will remember the next morning.

I do think I need hair and make up done and it's a one off.

Still totally undecided on stationery.
