Gastric Balloon - anyone had one?

I've just seen this exists.

First video I've pulled up and the poor woman was crying the hospital as the balloon was causing her pain and turns out it's stuck in her bowel. She has to have surgery and is terrified they will have to take some of her bowel and will be missing her holiday.

It's such as shame that so many struggle with their weight and these dangerous procedures seem to be profiteering from vulnerable people who desperately need help to lose weight. I wonder if she knew this was a complication.

Never heard of it. That sounds very grim and painful.

Was this on the NHS?

No, I think people are going privately for this and paying as much as a gastric sleeve.

I've had a sleeve the balloons are quite outdated as aa method and have a much bigger chance of complications. I would explore other surgeries.

There was a thread about gastric balloons last week. I think it might have been in AMA. It was a one year balloon (I didn’t know such a thing existed) and appeared to be a success for her

Oh sorry you aren't asking for yourself just to speculate. Are you referring to the more modern approach of swallowing the balloon so without surgery?

Do you have issues with your weight op?

DyslexicPoster · 25/03/2024 19:54

My friend but it was a few years ago. She struggled with it going in and coming out and she was quite sick for the first few weeks but she did lose a ton of weight. She was able to reset her portion size and how often she ate. I think that's a success really

yestothemess · 25/03/2024 20:15

@Lemoncokezero I think
I would like to lose 2 stone, but I wouldn't risk having a bowel resection for it.

Lots of cardio gets me to my ideal weight and I mean lots! I think my body was built to be a hunter. Problem is there's not enough time in the day - or energy! Weights seem to bulk me as I am muscular anyway.

I've just noticed that an awful lot of people are doing gastric sleeve now which I think is brilliant for those with massive weight to lose; I wondered if people were using the balloon because it's not as permanent. I'm sure they couldn't have known the risks of possibly having sections of their bowel removed.

It really shocked me and I feel so sorry for the poor woman.
