50s tired all the time - it that just it?

I work full time, one day a week at home, I go to the gym 2/3 mornings a week so get up at 6am to get there for 40 minutes circuits/weight class. Will do a long dog walk Sat and Sunday, walk 40 minutes a day in and out of work.

No kids - just me and DH at home. No caring responsibilities thank God.

I'm normally snoring by 10pm, I went to bed at 8.30 last night....ffs.

I don't sleep particularly well.

Not on HRT anymore as I've been advised against it.

I'm 2 stone overweight but I'm gradually losing that.

But I'm just knackered all the time - I could happily go for a nap now.

Well not sleeping particularly well will inevitably build up and make you knackered.

What have you tried (other than HRT) for the sleep?

Have you had thyroid, iron tested?

minipie · 25/03/2024 10:51

Oh and B vits and D

Adhdorlazy · 25/03/2024 10:53

I don’t mean to belittle your tiredness, but that sounds like a very active lifestyle!

Id have been knackered doing that in my 20’s. I still don’t think I’ve ever managed the holy grail of regularly going to gym 3 times a week!!

and up at 0600??? I’ve never managed that! I’m tired just reading your post!

Meadowfinch · 25/03/2024 10:55

No, not normally. You keep fit and you say you are generally healthy. Are you hydrated? A decent diet?

10pm - 6am is 8 hours, a good night's sleep but 8.30 is odd.

Go to the gp and explain. Ask her to test your thyroid, take a blood test and when is your next mammogram due?

I was falling asleep like that at 57. Mammogram appt arrived so I went and it found a tumour. All sorted now but I was lucky.

Never ignore unexplained tiredness.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/03/2024 11:03

It sounds like you are up early, work hard, do quite a bit of exercise, are menopausal but can't take HRT (was it your GP who said you shouldn't?) and you don't sleep well. When you put all that together, is it surprising you are tired?

Are you eating well and having fun in your life? Those things can energise you to some extent even if you can't change the rest.

BarrelOfOtters · 25/03/2024 11:09

@Meadowfinch I'm due a mammogram next month, that's the reason I'm off HRT as hormones meant they couldn't tell what was happening at my last scan and they couldn't do a biopsy.

I'm eating well, I'm also not drinking much as I can't do hangovers any more and really don't sleep if I've had a drink. I'm low in energy and could probably do with a bit more fun in my life, but have recently come back from a very nice holiday.

It's probably worth my booking in with GP to get bloods done.

If you don't sleep well then that's probably the reason. But if I were you I would have a blood test just to check all ok and your iron and vitamin levels.

romany4 · 25/03/2024 15:31

I'm on HRT and still very tired but I do wake up a lot in the night.
I just put it down to menopause as my bloods all came back fine

ErrolTheDragon · 25/03/2024 15:33

Definitely get those blood tests done, hypothyroidism is not uncommon at this age, as are issues due to some of the other things mentioned.

BarrelOfOtters · 25/03/2024 15:50

Thanks I've got a appointment with the nurse booked now at the end of April. I've had low B12 before now so it could be that. Wondered about thyroid as my mum had issues with her thyroid.

I'm not running around like a blue arsed fly, there's definitely been times in my life when I've been busier and had more stress, or stuff to do.

But I was so knackered last night I just thought, this is ridiculous.

Excess weight and poor sleep are the main culprits.

However I do believe in having a nap most days. I'm older than you and I have bags of energy as I'm outdoors a lot during the day and a combination of fresh air and exercise is great. But a nap of around 20-30mins recharges m mentally and physically.

EasterBunnny · 25/03/2024 16:09

Your poor sleep won’t be helping your weight and carrying excess weight combined with early starts is going to make to feel tired.
Could you get up a bit later and concentrate on your nutrition?

Not a bad shout to be honest. But I'm enjoying the strength I'm getting from the gym and going in the morning means I actually go. My recent weight loss has mostly been about eating smaller portions and better nutrition and cutting out snacking.

There is a 7.30 class that would mean more of a lie in but would mean arriving at work later....might try that for a couple of weeks...
