Sisters house quite dirty and niece skin infections

My Sisters house is cluttered and dirty and for wierd reasons she objects to any cleaning products witb fragrance so never really disinfected even bathroom just eco cleaners. My niece has had boils a few times treated with antibiotics.
I have a baby who they love to see but the cleanliness thing worries me. What should I do to avoid us catching all sorts? I assume try to meet elsewhere and hand washing?

You don't get boils from visiting a dirty house. DN might be more at risk from boils if her skin is at risk of small cuts eg from eczema and the skin gets infected - washing regularly helps prevent them. Even then getting the odd one can just be bad luck in areas where sensitive skin rubs - if your dsis is already using fragrance free products it may be because she or DN has sensitive skin and that makes them vulnerable to skin infections. My very clean DM gets them occasionally as she has very sensitive skin. Usually on her neck. And now she is v old they can take a while to heal and she is v self conscious about them. She would be mortified if she thought someone assumed she had them due to not washing!

There are plenty of eco friendly disinfectants. Just because the bathroom is cleaned with eco cleaners doesn't mean it isn't disinfected - although I appreciate you may be saying you don't think it is cleaned either.

Visit or don't your baby will be fine. Obviously carry on washing yourself and baby regularly anyway!

There is something called Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL), that can cause repeated boils, usually affects the whole family, to a greater or lesser degree.
Boils are usually found on extremeties/ groin/ armpits.
It may be necessary to explore this with GP if repeated boils occur.
GP should probably get specialist advice from microbiology if confirmed on swab as it is usually Methicillin Staph resistant, ( not sensitive to Penicllin, for example).
Whole family should be treated and bedding/ towels washed in high temperature Bio washing powder.

If it worries you arrange to meet up at a park, cafe or somewhere. Summer is coming so lots of outdoor meets. I used a steam mop with no disinfectant. I think it cleans well I do use antibacterial spray on worktops etc though and biological washing powder.

Interesting thank you. In slight glass houses shouldn't throw stones I now see that my kitchen spray Ecover isn't antibacterial either. Some health websites say you need antibacterial products and some say you dont! I guess it's a balance.

There are 3 issues that jump out here -

  1. Is your sister suffering with a MH issue?
  2. Repeated boils in children is not normal and warrants further investigations.
  3. Is a call to SS required to ensure your sister is getting the support she needs whilst safeguarding your niece.
