Car insurance experts? Niche situation!

Hello. Am trying to sort car insurance for my husband. Bit of a weird situation and hard to talk to insurers in person. It’s all online quotes and chatbots.
We are married but separated. We are named drivers on each others policies although don’t live at the same addresses. We never drive each others cars.
He has had a massive stroke and can’t drive. May never drive again or could be OK in a year or so.

He is in a flat. The car is parked in the allocated parking. Battery will be flat as it’s been 8 weeks since he was admitted to hospital. Unlikely to be released to home for at least a couple of months more.

While he is in hospital I need to help get his car serviced and MOT (by end of April). Then he is moving in May from the flat into a house he’s buying which has a garage. The car will be put in the garage until he can drive again. I will need to drive it there.
insurance due for renewal in April.

He is not well enough to navigate insurance quote sites so I am helping.

In the quote I have said I am main driver. As I will be the only driver. He is registered keeper. Address is mine? I know we will need to amend when he moves house any way.

Best quote is from a pay per drive place which make sense as I will literally only be taking it for service, keeping battery charged then taking it to the new house.

It’s the address that confusing me. I suppose I could drive it to mine once the service is done and keep it on my drive. Would be a pain though as I have a small tandem drive. Is that the only way? Can I be main driver of a car at a different address.

There’s also the protected no claims. The terms say I can’t have protected no claims on more than one car I am main driver for. So I have to uncheck that box for his insurance?

Yes it’s bloody obvious he should just sell the thing but he doesn’t want to! Would be more hassle for me as well.

Can you add his car to the insurance policy that you currently have for your car? I've done this in the past when helping MIL move house, just added her car to my policy as a second car for a few weeks. So much easier as your insurance already has your details.

I would ring up the insurance companies and speak to someone in person rather than doing it on line. That way you know that the insurance company has got all the relevant information.

I don't know about the address situation, sorry no help there.

With regard to using a no claims bonus, you can earn and apply it to each policy you are the main driver on. So if you have two cars, you can earn no claims bonus on each and use this when renewing. What you can't do is apply no claims bonus earned on one policy to more than one policy as a main driver.

In this scenario, I'd ring my own car insurers, ask if husband's car can be added to my policy for a short period. Once it's moved to the new location, you cancel his car off the policy.
Do check when the car tax expires, as you may need to involve the garage to shift the car and MOT it on trade plates.
He should SORN the car when it returns to his new house.
He can then, if he wishes, insure his car while it is SORN if he wishes, or not as the case may be.

Thanks all. Really helpful. What you are saying about adding his car to mine temporarily makes sense. I am a thinking about him being insured when really he doesn’t need to be.
Have also found a place which will come to the flats to do the MOT so that might work better. Much appreciated
