I need to give up bread and pasta...what do I have instead?

Bread and pasta give me horrible stomach pain (I have Diverticulosis) and sometimes cause partial blockages. I'm not a coeliac but it definitely doesn't agree with me.
I need to stop eating both entirely.
But what the hell do I replace them with? I have eaten a boiled egg with a slice of toast every day for breakfast since I was a toddler (in my 50s now!) I'm very repetitive with my food intake (two of my children have autism and I suspect I'd have been diagnosed if I'd been assessed)
Can't face porridge, cannot eat fruit IN anything. Can't eat bananas (I gag) so no idea what to eat for breakfast.

I eat plenty of salad, roast veg, my meals are quite healthy but pasta is a staple in our house and I don't know what to eat on 'pasta day' or 'pizza night' I could try gluten free I guess but I'd rather to find meals that don't use that either.

Can anyone help me meal plan simple vegetarian meals that I can substitute?

You could also try courgetti when the rest of the family is having pasta? It tastes fine with loads of butter on ime.

DigitalDust · 24/03/2024 19:46

I really like red lentil pasta if you wanted to try a pasta substitute

Could you just have an extra boiled egg to replace the toast? Or sliced avocado?

HelenHywater · 24/03/2024 19:47

@justasking111 my intolerances have become much worse since I became perimenopausal. I can barely eat anything now!

Substitute with potatoes?
Eg new potatoes and egg for breakfast, or swap pasta for potatoes on pasta night? And sub in gluten free versions as and when, but these are more processed and much more expensive than the good old spud.

DeanElderberry · 24/03/2024 19:48

Poached egg with avocado and a bit of grated cheese.

Flat mushroom and scrambled egg.

Omelette.

Rasher, egg, mushroom, tomato.

Sliced cold meats and cheese.

Those are my regular breakfasts. In the winter half of the year I also have a bowl of stewed apple (I cut up a Bramley apple directly into bowl, cover with a saucer, zap in the microwave or 3 minutes). In the summer I go out and pick raspberries or whatever soft fruit is available.

Can you manage an apple?

Breakfast could be a chopped up apple, some cinnamon and mix of pumpkin and sunflower seeds.

Full fat Greek yoghurt with cinnamon.

Think you should be eating 2 eggs at a time for protein. Have them with mushrooms, spinach etc.

Try rye bread. Investigate chickpea and buckwheat flour recipes. I'm currently making a banana buckwheat loaf. Am not a baker but this was an easy recipe and there's no banana texture.

Good luck!

THANKYOU everyone so far!!!

Luckydog7 that sounds just the sort of food I love... will give it a go!

I'm not great with rice either... I susect like wheat based foods it irritates my diverticula pouches... I've had a few really nasty partial blockages. I'm also bloody lactose intolerant!!!!

It's so depressing because my favourite meal would probably be crusty french stick with cheese and pesto (I can eat hard cheeses but soft cheese.milk, cream has a very unpleasant result!)

I will try the gluten free pasta I think, and just avoid bread... I love eggs so will try scrambled with spinache and tomatoes for breakfast instead of toast.

I reckon a 6 week trial should be enough to see if it really helps.

If you can eat oats, you could make porridge bread (any brand of porridge oats will work) - it toasts surprisingly well, and once it's a day old can be sliced thinly for sandwiches.

ColourByNumbers88 · 24/03/2024 19:52

Have a look at the HBD cookbook, OP. No wheat. It'll give you lots of ideas.

soupfiend · 24/03/2024 19:53

You probably need to be careful with spinach and celery as well, Im similar, stringy veg is no good

Proper spanish tortilla?

Potatoes boulangaire/dauphinoise?

Potato rosti base for a pizza (seen this on youtube)

Dhal is one of my favourite breakfasts

Bean fritters/burgers?

That looks amaziing, what is 'bread soda' mentioned in the recipe?

noodlezoodle · 24/03/2024 19:56

Hash browns with your egg for breakfast? Some good ideas here: https://www.shutterbean.com/2023/gluten-free-breakast-ideas/

Cous cous or quinoa also good.

Cous cous is pasta Hmm

crew2022 · 24/03/2024 19:56

Avocado and mushrooms or poached eggs for breakfast? Other days Greek yogurt with walnuts and honey?

howaboutchocolate · 24/03/2024 19:58

fungipie · 24/03/2024 19:53

no, it's corn.

No, it's semolina which is made from wheat.

DeanElderberry · 24/03/2024 19:58

Bread soda is bicarbonate of soda - used in Ireland by anyone who makes soda bread, so available under that name in all grocery aisles.

Lovely bread - but impossible to eat only one slice!

soupfiend · 24/03/2024 20:00

Have you ever frozen it?

fungipie · 24/03/2024 20:01

howaboutchocolate · 24/03/2024 19:58

No, it's semolina which is made from wheat.

Sorry, stand corrected. How about polenta, made from corn.

MrsBobtonTrent · 24/03/2024 20:01

I cut out bread a few years ago in an experimental phase. The greatest sub for toast with any egg was a potato waffle. Can cook them in a toaster. Poached egg on top or sliced and dunked in a boiled egg. Zero drama.

MumOfOneAwesomeHuman · 24/03/2024 20:07

Doves farm gluten free pasta is great and made from rice. If you don't want to give up pasta and can eat rice give it a try.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/03/2024 20:10

For breakfast, how about microwaving a jacket potato, which you can then slice and fry in the merest film of oil. Goes v well with any eggs.
When Im ‘off’ bread, I microwave more than one potato and keep the spares in the fridge.

Sorry coming back to you again, what are progress oatlets, I found them on the Flahavans site (we have their porridge oats in the cupboard), whats the difference? Website doesnt explain

Have you ever frozen it?

Yes, I have, and in that case sometimes it is possible to eat just one slice if that's all you take out of the freezer and toast! It stays tasting good for longer than regular bread because with all that yoghurt it's quite rich.
