Income protection and sickness insurance?

Just wondering if in general people have income protection or sickness insurance? I took out a policy about 4 years ago and (as expected) the price has risen steadily ever since. It would pay out about 3/4s of my salary for up to 24 months and it's the sort of policy that if I was long term sick I'd also be able to claim benefits which would (in theory) make up the shortfall.

I've worked for the same company for quite a lot of years but they're a family-run, very loyal sort of business so even though we contractually have 6 weeks sick pay, when others have been seriously ill, the company has always paid employees until they're able to return. Obviously that's not guaranteed or written into contracts so can't be relied on.

Just wondering if in general these policies are worth having and if others pay for them too? If I were to cancel, I'd probably struggle to get another as after I signed up I was put on meds for high BP. This is well controlled now but I'd have to declare that for a new policy and would probably come with all sorts of exclusions.

Anyway, not looking for advice as such, just wondering what others do and whether these policies are worth having. Mine costs £60pm.

Hi OP, they are definitely worth having. My husband & I have one and would never be without it. It’s the kind of thing that probably feels non-essential, until the worst happens and on top of worrying about your health/life you’re also worrying about keeping a roof over your head and food on the table.

I have a pretty low value mortgage insurance one that pays out my share of the mortgage, but then I get 6 months full pay for any sickness so the payout is just a huge bonus. It only costs me £12 a month but really is just for my half of the mortgage. I’ve had it years & have used it several times.

Wow, can I ask where you got it from at £12 a month?

Ours is £17 a month and covers the mortgage, but that’s been 25 years. We wouldn’t get the same now, so it’s not a fair comparison.

Definitely worth it, my boss has just come back to work after cancer, she had to have 2 years off and said it's the best money she's ever spent to not have to worry about money whilst she had treatment

We have them for DH. He is the main earner and while I do earn decently, it wouldn’t be enough to keep the level we have now and support a long-term ill person.

It is scheduled to finish when DD is 18.

That plus life insurance and mortgage protection are mandatory for me.
