Moving a digital piano from one room to another

We want to move the piano into a different room but going internally would mean tipping it on its side to get round a tight corner - anyone know if that is likely to damage it?

Another option is to take it outside and back in again through wide external doors, but there are a couple of steps down and back up again. The piano is about 80kg so DH and I would struggle with this.

Considering getting a quote from piano movers just to move it from one room to another!

I would definitely use a piano mover. It’s not worth risking it. I imagine they do this a lot more often then you think x

CroccyWoccy · 24/03/2024 08:08

I imagine it will be fine to move - we have a keyboard-style weighted digital piano and it’s been stored all ways up! I can’t imagine the mechanics are any different.

DarkAndBright · 24/03/2024 08:16

We have a digital piano (weighted keys). It’s never occurred to me to treat it any differently to an electric keyboard. It’s not a piano with a mechanism.

What model is it? Can you take the lefs off? As PP have said, digital pianos are pretty robust, but a bit heavy and you don't want to scratch it.

Bramshott · 24/03/2024 08:21

Lefs = legs obviously (can't edit on app)

I guess as it’s a ‘hybrid’ then I’m worried there is some mechanism that needs a bit more care than a standard keyboard.

Should be fine Op. We've got a really similar one and transported it from Cornwall to Wales in a transit van then had to huff it up some stairs and around a corner on a tilt.

PSEnny · 24/03/2024 08:38

Mine’s be moved several times and I’ve never paid any attention to which way up it is. I wouldn’t worry, it’s not like a traditional piano.

That’s good to know.

I have been weight-training since we first bought it. Maybe with my new muscles it’ll be a doddle 😂

It will be fine to tip on its side. There is no frame to warp/dislodge and the action is much more minimalist and robust than a real one. And there’s no risk of it going out of tune!

Sonolanona · 24/03/2024 10:19

I've moved my digital piano several times (a Roland) ..it's fine.. they are nothing like 'real' pianos internally and it won't go out of tune!

Bramshott · 24/03/2024 13:26

I'd say if you can get it off the stand and lift it without being in danger of dropping it, you'll be fine to tip it up onto one end.

Instantcustard · 24/03/2024 14:32

I'm confused by what they mean by hybrid. I have a hybrid and it has strings and hammers. This seems wholly digital?

Fourfurrymonsters · 24/03/2024 14:35

We’ve got a digital baby grand and it’s been moved several times on its side…no issues so far. I don’t think you need a piano mover for this, tbh.

drawnfrommemory · 24/03/2024 14:42

I think you probably just need a burly mate to give DH a hand if you don't think you'll be strong enough to help him. I didn't even give moving our digital piano a second thought last time we moved, but it got taken out of a tight space and down and round some steps with no issues.

PatriciaHolm · 24/03/2024 14:48

I would be careful - the hybrids do have a natural hammer type action -

and the FAQs say to keep the keyboard horizontal when moving.

Could you link to the FAQs please? Can’t find them on that website.

Moving a digital piano from one room to another
BloodyAdultDC · 24/03/2024 16:23

Jeez. We used to move the school piano every year using about 12 6th formers up 12 steps, into a minibus and out the other end.

Even a hybrid digital will be fine from one room to the next. How was it delivered op?

Thefutureisourownpath · 24/03/2024 16:28

Yes it will be fine. Just get more than two people we moved mine with three one was more spotting but they are bloody heavy - I love my white piano it was a dream to buy it!
