Just realised why my sons often miss Whatsapp/Gmail messages ...

... they don't see the notifications because they're knocked off the top of their screen by Snapchat notifications.

They both have Android phones. For Whatsapp/Gmail, there will be one on-screen notification, no matter how many messages they get. But for Snapchat they seem to get a notification for every 'snap' so they're all lined up at the top of the screen and quickly take up all the space, relegating other notifications to a less visible off-screen list (accessed by swiping).

I've searched to see if it's possible to limit the Snapchat notifications to one only, but the results so far have only said how to completely turn notifications off.

Are there any Snapchat users out there with a solution to this?

They could turn Snapchat notifications off. Or you can pick the type of notification on an iPhone so it either stays on the screen or just appears as a temporary banner at the top - can you do that for their phones?

You can choose to have a notification come up as a little window on your display screen.

Go into Settings and see what display options there are for the WhatsApp messages.

I think what happens is you message them, and then they get distracted by other stuff on their phone. It could be Snapchat or other WhatsApps or anything really.

DD is 22 now and usually gets back to me quite quickly so it does pass eventually!

Alternatively could you contact them by Snapchat so your messages are on their screen?

But it would show as red with a number on the icon. I just think they are busy & don't prioritise messaging you back. I would think that is quite normal for a teenager?

No, they don't show a number, they line up like this ...

... so if he gets a whatsapp/gmail message, followed 6-7 snapchat messages, the whatsapp/gmail icons disappear off-screen.

On the icon on my home screen the WhatsApp icon would have a red mark with a number on it to indicate how many unread WhatsApp messages I have.

YouveGotAFastCar · 24/03/2024 13:12

Does he want you to change this?

I mean; most teenagers I know are like this. They’d far prefer to be in touch with their friends than their parents

BaronessBomburst · 24/03/2024 13:15

No. I had this problem too so just downloaded Snapchat instead and message him there. If it's pertaining to a WhatsApp group I tell him to check it.
If I need to email him I use his school email address as he gets the notifications on his tablet instead, which he uses for gaming at weekends so still gets seen.

loropianalover · 24/03/2024 13:18

I sense they are probably happy with the way it is! They are not silly and know to check WhatsApp or gmail as it’s probably been mentioned a good few times, they are choosing not to check it imo.

Yes, Whatsapp does this, but snapchat doesn't.

Having investigated a little more, it seems to be because Snapchat has multiple types of notifications - e.g. "Best friend message" notifications, have a separate icon to other "Snap" notifications, and there are Story notifications, etc etc, all with their own icon. I went through the list with my younger son and he agreed some of them could be turned off, so we'll see if that helps.

It should show up like this & so isn't affected by Snapchat notifications. It does on my kids phones & so they can easily see if I messaged. I don't know if it's just on iPhone tho.

I wouldn't panic, Mum.

At that age, they're just not that into you.

You're on a back burner.
