Any district/community nurses who can help a student out by answering some questions!

Hi!

I’ve just finished my second week on a community placement and have some questions. I can ask my assessor on Tuesday when I’m next on shift but they’re running around my head now and I can’t find the answers on the internet.

firstly- syringe drivers
If a patient has PRN sub cuts prescribed and then a syringe driver prescribed, are the maximum doses separate? Eg:
PRN Sub cut max dose 30mg
Syringe driver dose is 30mg, can they ALSO have the sub cut doses at the same time

Is the hyoscine starting dose always 60mg?

Is honey a wet primary dressing?

thank you!

Not a nurse so can’t answer the dressing question but can answer the others.

Yes the syringe driver max is separate from the PRN however it should really be specified on the prescription. Eg ‘midazolam PRN 2.5mg max 10mg/24h (maximum does not include CSCI)’

And yes 60mg/24h is the usual
starting dose for hyoscine butylbromide

I'm not a district nurse but I work in tissue viability and can confirm honey (usually medihoney gauze, although can come in gel/cream) is a primary dressing for sloughy wounds.

Thank you @pleasecallmeback. can this be put on a foot wound if the wound has yet to be dopplered (I think that’s the phrase). Thanks

Yes, it can but would need to be prescribed by either an advanced nurse practitioner or doctor. Never use on diabetics though.
