That sounds ridiculous.

You need a second opinion.

Me!! Had a cough and felt rough for about 3wks but it hit my chest last week. Luckily the GP prescribed antibiotics over the phone. I’m on Day 3 of them now and can’t say I feel much better yet 😫

I’m really fed up now I’ve been coughing up nasty and it’s every day I think I do need to get a second opinion

I’ve read that in otherwise healthy people antibiotics aren’t needed to clear up chest infections, they will go of their own accord with a bit of time and discomfort, and taking them when not really needed is making the antibiotic resistance problem worse.

Nicetobenice67 · 23/03/2024 21:35

I’m just worried it will turn to something worse as I’m not getting any better

Turmeric?! Blimey. I wouldn't be happy with that as a serious medical suggestion for a stubborn chest infection.

I had a chest infection last week and was given antibiotics and an inhaler from an OOH GP.

I would definitely go back!

I am sorry to hear this. Strange diagnosis : chest infection. Wondering why you weren't told what type: is it bronchitis (viral) or is it pneumonia (can be viral, bacterial, or secondary bacterial- following viral). Quite important to know what type of chest infection you have- the diagnosis: how can you be treated if you weren't even told the name of the condition? https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/pneumonia/symptoms-causes/syc-20354204 & https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/bronchitis/symptoms-causes/syc-20355566 Hard to believe you weren't told what type of chest infection you have, what caused it and about the fact that viral infection can be treated with antivirals, bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics

Pneumonia - Symptoms and causes

I have now had a chest xray and pneumonia was found got to have blood test to see if there are any underlying problems

If it’s viral then antibiotics won’t help.

https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/24002-covid-pneumonia Did they rule out covid?''All pneumonias cause inflammation and fluid in your lungs. But research suggests that the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID pneumonia moves differently through your lungs than other viruses and bacteria that cause pneumonia.
COVID pneumonia spreads across your lungs slowly, using your own immune system to spread, which means it tends to last longer and cause damage in more places. Other pneumonias cause acute disease — symptoms come on all at once — but don’t last as long.''

COVID-19 Pneumonia: Symptoms, Treatment & Recovery

COVID pneumonia is a lung infection caused by SARS CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Fluid and inflammation in your lungs makes it hard to breathe.

  • What do you mean 'pneumonia was found'? Chest infection = pneumonia. How was it just found when you were diagnosed 3 weeks ago? Didn't they test before to find out the cause? ''Sputum test. A sample of fluid from your lungs (sputum) is taken after a deep cough and analyzed to help pinpoint the cause of the infection''.
