Asda - WTF is going on?

MuggedByReality · 23/03/2024 20:15

I went into a big out of town Asda store in the East Midlands this afternoon. The place was a chaotic shambles, it looked like some sort of organisational meltdown had happened. Empty wooden pallets scattered around. Empty shelves all over the store. Piles of boxes of stock which should have been on said shelves dumped & piled up in aisles. Massive queues at the customer service desk. Very few staff visible anywhere. I gave up & went to the nearby Sainsbury’s instead which was completely fine.

Is Asda struggling? Has anyone else noticed major problems recently or was this just one store having a bad day?

Not really but I have had quite a few substitutions recently. I had a slug in a prepacked salad the other day though.

They've just bought and are currently rebranding our local petrol station and associated shop!

They bought our local petrol station and shop in the autumn, then ended up having to close several times due to flooding because they wouldn't keep the culvert that runs under it clear. The Co-op owned it before and they kept it clear. They also had a better range of food and wines. We only buy milk and fuel from there now.

They kept the Co-op staff on, but they all hate working for Asda.

I have heard that they are in trouble and are selling off some assets, like the petrol stations.

@OutOfTheHouse

yet in my small town they've just bought out another supermarket & petrol station.

no idea what's going on ?!

Ours is awful.

Always boxes everywhere. Empty shelves. Everything in alarmed boxes.

usernother · 23/03/2024 21:12

Ours doesn't have empty shelves but it's often untidy, the shelves need tidying. I blame the management.

Onand · 23/03/2024 21:14

I’ve always found Asda to be rough, in Manchester they’re particularly abysmal so we’d only ever go if there was something very specific we needed, otherwise we stay well clear. The last time I went in one everything was amongst the horrible stark white lighting and the awful garish green branding, horrendous.

I'm in Manchester and agree with this

QueenOfHiraeth · 23/03/2024 21:18

Our Asda is good. There's odd times in the week when the stock is low, Monday morning is particularly bad due to lack of stackers on Sundays
Generally it has a good range of stock, the veg doesn't go off within 10 minutes of purchase like Aldi and Lidl and it is very reasonably priced.
I used to shop at Morrisons but found the prices rising and it was a pain having to activate offers on the app or spend £x a week for x weeks whereas Asda just add any offers money to your online cashpot.
Oddly it's Sainsburys that is the weakest link round here although they are, apparently, having a refit soon

Northernsouloldies · 23/03/2024 21:19

It's the cutting back on staff procedures, clean and go doesn't work (cut backs on cleaning staff and procedures) cut back on night shift staff so that's why there's packages everywhere and spaces on shelves, throw in click collect staff with cages, staff with stock cages....it hasn't worked and a lot of the staff hate working there now.a major fuck up this week with wages new IT system.

Re the Easter Eggs- they've had them in for months- it's now only 6 days till Good Friday. They want to be running their stock down at this stage!

Re the stock/ chaos etc- will it be anything to do with this I wonder?

Agreed but surely I’m not the only one who buys early but then gives in to temptation and eats them all so needs to restock! I’m sure if they had extra, they could still shift them at 4 for £10 long after Easter. Everyone knows chocolate tastes so much better in egg form! 😂

Put them in the loft or somewhere else out of sight?

IWantTheOneICantHave · 23/03/2024 21:29

Like a PP, just about every time I go in ours I find something out of date. Mainly in the fridges.
One time I got a delivery and had out of date fresh stuff, not best before but use by, I sent photos of the dates to request a refund and they refused to refund me. So they broke the law by selling me this stuff and I'm the one that was out of pocket.

Also lots of empty shelves.

Hate the place but we have nowhere else.

grumpytoddler1 · 23/03/2024 21:31

I really think they are about to go bust. They don't seem to be able to service their debt and they also seem to be more bothered about their own personal rift than running the business.

Northernsouloldies · 23/03/2024 21:33

They scrapped night shift at ours and got rid of a team of 12 and took back 3 to resume night shift.obviously team of 3 can't do the work of 12.

Hopefully not that would be thousands of people out of work.

hellofrommyothername · 23/03/2024 21:37

I hope it’s not going out of business, I currently go out of my way to go to Asda because I find their own brand nappies are much better than Tesco which is much nearer to me!

Notatthemoment · 23/03/2024 21:39

I find this with lots of supermarkets. Our local Sainsbury's, Morrison's and Tesco are becoming increasingly run down and shabby and shabby with irritable, short- fused staff. Our Waitrose and M&S are tidier but staff are noticeably unhappy

MrsKeats · 23/03/2024 21:39

Cannot stand Asda.
Happy to pay more for good food and choice.

DanceMumTaxi · 23/03/2024 21:42

Ours always has stock problems. It doesn’t matter what day or time I get the food shop delivered there’s always loads missing or substituted. It’s the same if I go in to try and do the big shop. It never used to be this bad, but it’s getting noticeably worse over the last 6 months. I’ve cancelled my delivery saver and I’m going to give Sainsbury’s a go to see if they’re any better.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 23/03/2024 21:43

Agree. Ours has been mental for a while. Lots of empty shelves loads of pallets everywhere basically looking like it's been raided

ohpumpkinseeds · 23/03/2024 21:44

I've got a weird loyalty to our Asda. I used to be a Tesco shopper and looked down my nose a bit at Asda - but during lockdown I couldn't get a Tesco delivery for love nor money for weeks, and then when I did it was for such a small number of items it wasn't worth it.

I tried Asda by chance and they had slots within a few days and I used them consistently through the rest of lockdown. I still use them now, and in fact have just booked a delivery for tomorrow morning between 7-9am which I think is brilliant to have that option!

I rarely get substitutions and everything is always well dated. My only gripe is probably once a month some eggs will be broken!

justasking111 · 23/03/2024 21:46

I suspect their suppliers aren't being paid. The brothers have bitten off more than they can chew

Northernsouloldies · 23/03/2024 21:49

That's a leap ,if you read what I've posted it gives the reasons for why it's like that in store.

JiraffDeSaki · 23/03/2024 21:49

The little one on the outskirts of Grimsby? Haven't been out to that one in a while!

The Tesco nearer the town often has very empty shelves though.

GlobetrottingPercy · 23/03/2024 21:49

Our nearest one is also an out of town on the same road as a big Sainsbury’s, also in the EM. Stock levels are awful, the shelves are always bare in certain aisles like baby food and toiletries and there are always massive queues. They were brilliant during lockdown and were the only place we could get a click and collect from with hardly any substitutions but have gone massively downhill since.
