Just feeling nostalgic for a daft Saturday night programme we csn all watch together instead of everyone watching stuff on their own....

Nope.

fivetriangulartrees · 23/03/2024 18:56

I used to have regular cravings for Saturday night TV. Mostly Noel's House Party tbh, but the Generation Game would have done.

NashvilleQueen · 23/03/2024 18:56

Not in the slightest.

No x 1000.

They ruined the show when they asked Jim Davidson to take over as host.

Funny I was just thinking about this tonight along with play your cards right.

Bruce was really good at these programs.

Didn't she/he do well? Good game... Good game

Totallybannanas · 24/03/2024 02:21

I miss decent Saturday night TV, family game shows, drama then a movie premiere. Can't stand any and Dec or the game shows they have now

Guavafish1 · 24/03/2024 02:27

But yes there was a comfort in Saturday night TV. After spending the morning going shopping or doing a hobby.

It was nice to spend time with family watching some fun TV for all the ages, together.

MississippiAF · 24/03/2024 03:06

I miss a lot of old Saturday night tv, but not this.

People watched the same thing as there were only 4 channels and no internet/streaming. You had to watch what was on.

Bruce was really good at these programs.

He was good at presenting the various gameshows that he did - but I never thought that he came across as a very nice or empathetic person at all.

He was always condescending and very frequently horribly sexist towards female contestants. He would often 'help' women (who were 'obviously' less able than the men) in ways that looked suspiciously like he was pawing at them.

I still remember the time on one of his gameshows (maybe Play Your Cards Right?) where the couple won the car and the woman headed straight towards the driver's seat and the man automatically went straight for the passenger seat. Bruce tried to physically stop her and usher her husband towards that seat instead - he actually told her that the passenger seat was where she should sit - and the husband exclaimed "I can't drive - she's going to be the one driving it!" Egg and his face were in alignment!

As for The Generation Game itself, I'm no snob and have very happily watched and enjoyed a lot of silly gameshows in my time; but TGG just seemed a bit too unstructured and OTT try-hard even for me.

I remember watching the ones with Larry Grayson with my nana, fond memories but I don’t think it would work now.

Yes, I guess this is what I'm missing. Three teenagers in the house and we rarely watch anything together as there is too much choice. Growing up with 3 channels (2 really as my mum refused to watch ITV!) was simpler.

Saturday TV nights in the 90s were brilliant.

We've really enjoyed watching the Gladiators reboot as a family.

PuppiesOnTheWay · 24/03/2024 08:54

I don't miss the show as such, I miss being a child and thinking everything (including my parents) was amazing!
Home was my happiest place at that time in my life and shows like that set off pangs of nostalgia for the simpler times, I've tried to watch gladiators as an adult and I just cringe my way through it to be honest!!
