Anybody painted their own wooden toys

I fell victim of the grapat/Grimm's toys mania (I know, I know, don't judge me).

I just can't afford them new (they are hard to find anyway) and there doesn't seem to be any sold second hand.

I was thinking about buying unpainted one on Amazon and paint it myself (with special toy safe paint, obviously).

Has anyone done that? Are there risks I can't see? Is it harder than I think it will be?

Hi, I'm a maker. (of many things)

For anything for children I use Rust Oleum painters touch because it's water based, meets EU toy safety standards, and does the job well.
Follow instructions, don't try to do 2nd coats etc to early, surface will potentially wrinkle. Good brushes help, but in emergency I've used all sorts.

If the unpainted items are sold as finished natural wood you may need to to gently rub down with fine grade sandpaper if they have any sort of finish/sealent on them.

If you're patient and capable of making simple brush strokes and following drying instructions, I don't see much risk. Buy a pot and paint a piece of wood first, see how you go.
