Can you eat jarred pasta sauce when pregnant

Might be a silly question but is it ok to eat pasta sauce from a jar that contains meat? I'm freaking out as I had a tomato and bacon pasta sauce for dinner last night not even thinking about it until afterwards. I have read that they are fine but still panicking. I'm an anxious person and worry about everything it's so exhausting

I'm astounded that anyone buys tomato based pasta sauce....... especially someone with such extreme health anxiety!

Why on earth don't you make your own so you know exactly what's in it????

Healthier
More delicious (made to YOUR taste)
Cheaper (much)

I suggest getting out more if this astounds you

I didn’t change my diet through any of my pregnancy’s. I everything in moderations (except alcohol and I did try to limit caffeine, except in the the form of chocolate 😂)

The advice is there to avoid food poisoning and sickness, as it can dehydrate you and that can effect baby. But if you are sensible it’s very very unlikely. When was the last time you got sick from pre-packaged cured meats for example? Or a pasta sauce? Or a supermarket cheese?

Even with cured meats, you can freeze them for 24hours before eating to kill any bacteria too, then you can eat them.

Pasta sauce is absolutely fine. Seriously though, try not to sweat the small stuff, you’ll take off the joy away from being pregnant.

Freezing does not kill food bacteria, it suspends it. As soon as the food reaches a temperature at which the bacteria can operate they are viable again. The danger is that if you think you have killed the bacteria you will not be as vigilant with food safety.

Jarred pasta sauce has been manufactured and processed at high temperature so most bacteria will have been killed, so if you open it , follow heating instructions and eat the contents immediately you should be safe. I would be much more worried about the additives included in the list of ingredients. As the saying goes, if you don’t have those weird ingredients in your own cupboard why would you want to buy them in a jar?

Do midwives not tell you what's off list anymore?

Newsenmum · 23/03/2024 10:04

Op try and think logically, why would a jar be harmful ? Is it bacon you’re worried about? Too much processed food isn’t good generally but a bit of bacon is absolutely fine. Eat like you would being healthy if not pregnant. It’s basically the same.

😂 this answer is amazing

If you're being serious though OP please speak to your midwife. Pregnancy can be a worrying time but stressing to this extent about jarred pasta sauce is concerning.

Singleandproud · 23/03/2024 10:05

Humans have been having babies for millenia eating all sorts of food and diets and we have survived. You will be fine but you do need to get the anxiety under control the cortisol from that will do the baby more harm than what you eat.

Victory2004 · 23/03/2024 10:13

Jesus Christ. I suffered from anxiety when pregnant but the thought of pasta sauce being harmful never crossed my mind once. It's one of the safest things to eat.

In fairness, although he is not specifically named on the NHS list, the OP probably shouldn't eat him.

At least cook him thoroughly first 😂

Oblomov24 · 23/03/2024 10:19

Eh? Sorry? What on earth is the issue. Of course it's fine.

What are you currently doing to address your anxiety. This should be started now to stop your anxiety damaging your child.

op, you need to be getting regular treatment for anxiety.

PossumintheHouse · 23/03/2024 10:26

As long as it was organic.

Nicole1111 · 23/03/2024 11:14

You definitely can. Have you spoken to your midwife about the high levels of anxiety you’re experiencing?

Unless he’s been frozen, defrosted and frozen again.

OP, do get some support, it’s great to enjoy as much of your pregnancy if you can.
pasta sauce in a jar is just so safe. And easy.

There are SO many reasons. Takes longer, easier for people with some disabilities, easier for people with limited cooking facilities.

I'm also not convinced it is "cheaper" - to make a tomato and bacon pasta sauce you'd have to buy at least onions, chopped tomatoes, seasoning (herbs, garlic etc) and bacon. Yes you'd be able to make a larger quantity but if you've only got a couple of quid for a meal then it's not realistic.

babysnowman · 23/03/2024 11:22

Jesus the amount of snarky comments. Poor woman is pregnant and anxious. Anxiety can show up in pregnancy about things that wouldn't normally cross your mind - I'm sure that happened to a lot of us.

🤦🏼‍♀️

AngeloMysterioso · 23/03/2024 13:37

First pregnancy?

Don’t worry about it OP. I remember checking Google to see if it was ok to drink pineapple juice when I was early days pregnant with DC1 Grin

trampoline123 · 23/03/2024 13:59

With the kindest intentions, if your anxiety is this bad you should try and get help for it, this is just the beginning. I was never anxious and once I'd had children I over think everything.
