Handhold please.. 3 week old admitted to hospital

My 3 week old baby has just been admitted into hospital due to spiking a temperature- the doctors have taken bloods and are growing blood cultures to rule out sepsis but have inserted a cannula and have started antibiotics in the meantime whilst we wait for the results.

I'm sat here absolutely petrified just watching him to check he is breathing, feeling so alone so anyone awake that would like to keep me distracted from sobbing all night would mean the world. My husband is at home with our little girl who is sound asleep and I just want to scoop them both up and never let go right now 🥺

Thinking of you ❤️

twitchybum · 23/03/2024 03:48

Sending you so much love. My little boy spiked a temp the day after he was born and we were taken to NICU for tests and antibiotics. He's in the best hands and hopefully the antibiotics see it off quickly like they did for my little boy. It's such a scary intimidating place plus the added hormones and anxiety, go easy on yourself. I cried the whole time we were in but the nurses were amazing x

LipikarAP · 23/03/2024 03:54

Hand hold here too Flowers I hope you get good news about the bloods soon. Remember to look after yourself too - eat and drink if you can.

johnworf · 23/03/2024 03:58

Hoping they get to the bottom of what's making him poorly very soon.

Big hugs to you x

This happened to me with my second OP, pretty much exactly. In her case it was a virus (RSV), we spent a rough week in hospital because she needed a bit of oxygen, but she’s had no issues since and is now a very chunky, hilarious almost-2 year old.

The protocol to start antibiotics while waiting for cultures means that she’s being treated for the worst case scenario just in case, but there’s every chance the cultures will come back clear and she can have the line out in a couple of days. Thinking of you though, I was a complete mess when my DD was going through it I think it’s normal to be frantic when they’re that small.

Zoflorabore · 23/03/2024 04:09

Hi op, big hugs to you.

I’ve been there with a 3 week old in hospital and I still remember that fear like it was yesterday.
my then baby ds was really unwell and was admitted to Alder Hey ( we only live 10 mins away ) and he was tested for all kinds and then diagnosed with pyloric stenosis and operated on when he was so tiny, after a week in hospital he made a full recovery and was 21 a few weeks ago.

i think also during the middle of the night everything feels so much worse and scary. Your baby is in the best hands and you need to look after you so you can be there for him ( easier said than done I know! )

i am saying a prayer for you and your ds 💙

CrispAppleStrudels · 23/03/2024 04:29

So sorry to hear this, OP. Flowers My DD had sepsis when she was 23hrs old. Its such a scary time, but your baby is absolutely in the right place and the fact they have started antibiotics already is great news. My DD is now a healthy thriving nearly 3yr old. Sending you lots of positive thoughts and hopefully they can work out what is going on soon.

HoppingPavlova · 23/03/2024 04:40

That’s very scary for you. However, rest assured, from what you have stated, your baby is in good hands and proactively starting with an antibiotic is the best thing and it gives a head start. They can then either stop or switch to something more targeted when the bloods come back, if necessary.

WafflesOrIceCream · 23/03/2024 05:14

You are in the best place with the best people there to help your little one. Please look after yourself too.

miniworry · 23/03/2024 05:22

Thank you everyone for sharing your stories ❤️ I'm so tired but little man won't go down in the hospital cot, I think he also may have reflux as he just growls when he's on his back in the hospital cot so I've got him asleep on me, trying to stay awake and soak in the cuddles but worried about making him hotter!

Wishing him a speedy recovery and a handhold for you .

They take extra care at his age so will just be ruling out everything

ElizabethanAgain · 23/03/2024 05:34

Best wishes from Australia. All my love and prayers for you and your little one.❤️

blackberryhill · 23/03/2024 05:46

Thinking of you and your little one - as others have said, you're in the best place you could beat and with such a tiny one they won't take any chances.

Ihearyousingingdownthewire · 23/03/2024 07:09

I had the exact same thing with my baby at 2/3 weeks. Spiked a temp. Had a lumbar puncture, they took bloods and we spent a week in hospital on antibiotics and acyclovir while they waited for the results. They were absolutely fine, though being woken for constant infusions and observations was tough. It turned out to be a very common virus that caused a viral meningitis, and they’re now right as rain.

Get crossword books, ipad, home comforts etc for you, and bed in. They take no risks with little ones.

Firsttimetrier · 23/03/2024 07:15

Hope little one is okay @miniworry.

My then 18 month old was in hospital for 3 nights just before Christmas on oxygen and an IV for bronchiolitis, so know the worry.

Things that got me through were not googling (it will always tell you the worst case scenario) and reassuring myself he was in the best place, even if things did go sideways.

He also wouldn’t sleep in the hospital cot by himself, so I had to spend 3 nights in the cot with him, which was the most uncomfortable sleep I’ve ever had, but at least meant he slept to get better.

Hope you get some positive news this morning.

miniworry · 23/03/2024 07:36

@Firsttimetrier I did eye up the cot and thought about getting in it too but I had visions of it just collapsing the minute I did! 😆

No news on the blood results yet but his temperature on last testing was 37.1. He is taking his milk well too which I'm trying to see as a positive sign.

Thanks again for helping me take my mind off being here alone xx

My middle child was admitted at 3 weeks for 3 days of IV ABs because of extremely fast breathiog. Entirely well otherwise, feeding, no temp and I felt a bit of a fraud on that ward after a day or two. They did imaging which was inconclusive and I think were concerned about pneumonia (he had had meconium in his waters, which were broken very late in labour) but he was fine after those ABs and they never found out what it was. He's now a 16yo fitness freak.

Hope you find out more soon and are able to go home with him soon too.
