Hip bursitis.

Anyone had this?
Went to GP after months of hip pain , just one hip. GP told me to take ibuprofen so I paid for a private scan thinking maybe the joint was worn out.
Scan showed bursitis which I’d never heard of so googled. I went back to GP who wasn’t happy I’d had a private scan , she told me there was no NHS treatment available and I’d have to look at private treatment.
I can see two options online, a steroid ( cortisone?) injection or shockwave therapy.
Does anyone have any experience of these or indeed any treatment that would stop the pain ? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks for this thread OP. I've had an aching hip for a few weeks and I'm now thinking that perhaps bursitis is the cause of it.

I've had steroids injection three times one worked two years next a month third around a year, shock wave for around 6 months ....acupuncture and deep tissue last about 8 then I have another session....the only one I have paid for is the acupuncture and deep tissue....around £50

I have a hip bursitis and have had it for several years now. It comes and goes - I did have a series of yearly steroid injections which really helped but my doctor says I can't have any more. He wants me to try electro shock therapy but it seems to be very, very expensive. Has anyone had it with any success?

Exercise made mine worse - it flared up every time.

I am currently suffering with this for the second time.
Rest and physio are what worked first time around. Depending on where you are you may be able to self refer for physio.

I have had this for a few months. This is the second time

First time I went to physio and did the exercises, had the dry needling and shockwave therapy. It didn't work so got referred to orthopedic surgeon who did MRI and diagnosed bursitis. Got a steroid injection and it took the pain away. I was warned it would come back and I now have another injury which rules out most of the exercises I used to do.

I won't be covered by my insurance this time annoyingly.

My NHS did it when a nice review stopped acupuncture but it wasn't great almost like tens machine and massage.
I have to spend my money now so massage and acupuncture with a private physio ....the massage hurts but works I get 6 to 12 months out of a course of 2 treatments and it's never been as bad as it was when I started....couldn't walk or climb stairs or lay on that side, now when sleeping starts to get uncomfortable I book a session ....I also use a massage gun.

I've had this in both hips. Highly recommend physio. It was a slow road but they were so helpful - I used to sit with my feet up beside me on the sofa, stand with weight more on one leg than the other. All those things weren't helping. Also had exercises to do, and they also helped figure out forms of exercise I could do that wouldn't make it worse. It's a long time ago and I still remember the pain, it was brutal. Best of luck with recovery.

My mum has this and gets the injection done each year. It worked perfectly the first time but has to have the latest redone.

When it works she says it’s like magic!

Sorry you’re experiencing this discomfort and hope you can get relief soon

I had this a few years ago and went to the physio. He suggested and gave gave me a cortisone injection before starting specific exercises and also losing weight.

DungareesAndTrombones · 23/03/2024 20:04

I have this and had a steroid injection a few years ago on the NHS. It was not the most pleasant of experiences as they have to move the needle around the hip joint to inject the steroid. I had to rest for a day afterwards but other than that I was fine. Don't feel like it had any long lasting results so now I take naproxen - but I've got osteoarthritis anyway.

@Millymollypandywhat type of scan did you have to diagnose this?

SummerBreeze2 · 23/04/2025 16:57

Hi, I had a bad fall in 2019. Covid times. I tore the muscle off the bone in my gluteus. It took 2 yrs to get diagnosed. Like you, all my GP came up with, was, take painkillers! I had to pay privately to get it anchored back onto the bone because the NHS were so slow & my symptoms were getting worse by the month. Now I have developed your problem in the opposite hip. It only came after the initial hip repair. probably due to my walking wrong & using my other hip more, & massive muscle waste. I have had the injection under a full anaesthetic 7wks ago. Unfortunately for me, it didn't help & is 10 times worse now. They reckon a cyst has burst & from going from a mild case of bursitis, now need a hip replacement. Good old NHS, thanks for nothing & ruing my life. I have yet another consultation this coming wk. Your GP has no right to tell you there is no help out there on the NHS, for although it is very slow coming, it is there. I also have an added disability being 'hypermobility' that I only found out about 4wks ago, meaning my tendons are not strong enough to hold the hips in place, they are too elastic. Good luck with your hips & I hope you get some help soon, if not already. Best wishes.
