Do you put butter in a jam sandwich?

It’s my son’s 5th birthday party tomorrow and I’m doing little snack boxes for the kids with a sandwich, crisps etc rather than doing a big buffet. A few of the kids have asked for a jam sandwich. My son doesn’t like butter when he has a jam sandwich but do butter and jam usually go together? I’ve asked a few friends and had a very mixed response about whether I should or shouldn’t butter the bread!

Definitely with butter

Tisfortired · 22/03/2024 13:35

Definitely. Really want one now. On soft squishy white bread.

I thought all sandwiches have butter...

Yes definitely!

Me too.

Floralnomad · 22/03/2024 13:45

No . My husband likes butter and jam but I would only have jam

SirChenjins · 22/03/2024 13:46

Definitely - although there will no doubt be some kids who don’t like butter. Do some with and some without.

AlltheFs · 22/03/2024 13:50

I’d do butter but only a bit.

It’s not something we have though as it’s the only sandwich DD won’t eat 😂

She ate a crayfish and spinach one the other day. But offer her Jam and she looks at you like it’s poison.

Pipecleanerrevival · 22/03/2024 13:51

Do some with and some without. And one with cheese and pickle for me.

Tarkan · 22/03/2024 13:52

I do but I can't handle sandwich fillings touching bread without there being butter on it first. Blush It's only really burger buns I don't butter but I don't like having to assemble a burger because of it.

AffIt · 22/03/2024 13:59

I do, but my OH thinks it's an abomination. One of the few points of contention in our house.

Sorry, that wasn't a lot of help.

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 22/03/2024 14:00

Ew no. Definitely not

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 22/03/2024 14:14

Yeah, most people would have butter with jam. In all sandwiches in fact.

I hate butter in sandwiches though, I don't like the way things can slide against it, but I know I'm in the minority. I remember as a young child being made to eat a thickly margarined egg sandwich (grim without the marg) by a friend's mum at a party - choking it down and trying to hold back the tears!

Yes! Doesn't it provide a slightly waterproof barrier between the bread and the filling and stops the sandwich going soggy? Plus it tastes better. It has to be butter and only lightly spread too. Thick margarine is grim.

Giggorata · 22/03/2024 14:32

Of course.

Jam, soaking miserably into bread, making the jam sandwich experience, soggy, nastily textured, if not downright damp - awful and such a let down.

Jam, spreading happily on top of butter, combining its sweetness and tartness with the creamy, smooth taste, with this buttery barrier also retaining the integrity of the bread - glorious.

@gladwhiskers So did I until I learnt that American's don't butter their bread - they do mayo instead. I can't understate how shocked I was that there are loads of American's who've never even heard of butter in a sandwich

justmyluck1234 · 22/03/2024 14:44

See for me personally I would only have jam ... can't do you a bit of both?

evilharpy · 22/03/2024 14:46

No, absolutely not. Jam only (or peanut butter/honey/lemon curd). Same for toast.

Wow! I'm gobsmacked!

But mayo could be a tasty option in some cases - not sure about mayo and jam though...

SpringOfContentment · 22/03/2024 14:57

Butter, yes.
Margarine, no.

DappledThings · 22/03/2024 15:03

Yes, definitely. Butter (or marge, I'm not fussed despite that being considered sacrilegious) in all sandwiches and under all toast toppings. Yes I'm including peanut butter in that. Just because it has butter in the name doesn't stop it being a topping that requires the undercoat.
