Anyone using progesterone vaginally if it gave you crashing low moods orally?

I'm peri and started HRT last Oct. The progesterone tablets (ugesterone white gel capsules) have given me devastating low mood and crashing despair for 2-3 days a month. Doctor is suggesting trying them vaginally.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if switching to vaginal use was helpful?

I tolerate them better vaginally, seems to bypass many of the side effects that way. Definitely worth a try.

Me too, much better mh when taking it vaginally. One capsule instead of two as well, so a box lasts 2 months / cycles.

@paranoidmumdroid1 did your GP advice just one tablet? Mine said you can use 2 or 1, which sounded a bit vague.

I have been fine on progesterone for a while and have been taking 1 tablet continuously. However, recently I’ve had very low moods and anxiety. One day last week I was just sobbing all day.

I spoke to my doctor and we agreed I could try them vaginally after she had checked the British Menopause Society website. She has told me one a day but on the Louise Newson site it says to use one every other day. I’m currently going with what my doctor says but am unsure. Although I know it’s really important to get enough progesterone so the womb lining doesn’t thicken. She couldn’t tell me if it was safe to have too much though😕

I spent 2w a month believing the world would be a better place without me in it when I was in utrogestan. It also made me bleed so vaginal wasn't an option.

I switched to patches and now I'm totally invincible for those 2 weeks. The other 2 weeks are tolerable - but definitely better than the urtrogestan weeks!

There's bound to be a way that works for you!

Yes - I switched to taking one tablet vaginally from two orally
. I'm doing that two weeks out of. Four. But I think that's because I'm still having periods. But they are disappearing so I think I'll be moving onto every other day at some point

UPDATE

Started to bleed after a few days on one utrogestan vaginally. Also suffered with horrendous cramping. Back to taking it orally now 🙄

Droolylabradors · 31/03/2024 18:55

OP, I still had all the side effects vaginally, but also thrush.

Utro made me so utterly depressed for at least 2 weeks a month.

Switched to mirena and it's so much better. No crying. Sleep like a baby. Some small side effects like tiredness and headaches but a million times better than utro.

Yes - it was a miracle cure!
That was a few years ago. I am struggling again now though which I think is due to lower levels of hormones

And possibly tricky teen years of my kids if I'm honest

Two tablets orally became 1 tablet vaginally

Hi I know this is old but did this work for you ? Iv had the same reaction to progestone orally

Avocadocat · 23/10/2025 14:50

Does anyone know if this is possible with combined pill HRT? I know you can take oestrogen locally using Gina so I’m guessing it might be safe but would it be a case that the oestrogen isn’t then absorbed so systemically?
